RoboStir - HUH?

Doing my usual leisurely perusal of the LA Times Sunday paper this
morning. Came upon the Parade Magazine, which often has weird,
ridiculous or just plain head scratching gadgets advertised (in
between offers for fake U.S. Mint memorial coins and really bad
ceramic collectible dolls), when I came upon an advert for an
automatic stirring device. Looks like it belongs in those old Popeil
veg-o-matic type ads, AFAICS

No comment, although I did spew a mocha java when I saw the video
spot.

Not of interest to me, but I'd guess it has some uses for people that may
have multiple pots going that need a stir. I wonder how it would be in a
commercial setting with lots going on.

I saw that in Parade as well. Even in the ad, it looked awfully flimsy
to me. It wouldn't stand a chance against a Louisiana-style roux. I'll
save the money and rely on the four arms in our household for
long-stirring recipes.

I agree with Cindy. My first reaction was "underpowered and flimsy."
There's also no mention of how it's powered--battery? recharger?

Haven't seen that design before. Looks like as soon as it would hit a
chunk of anything like a 1/2" square piece of chicken it would easily
topple over and start flopping around in the pan, making a mess of the
stove top.

I have a fancier variation of that and it is the ONLY way I make
sauces and custards now. Talk about set it and forget it.

I know it sounds absolutely preposterous, but it is a terrific gadget.
In my case, what with the rheumatoid arthritis, it is a real help, but
frankly, standing around stirring custard is not my idea of
scintillating fun anyway.

The idea isn't new, most chem labs have some equivalent and I got mine
on a lark for a song. Now I have my eye out at yard sales to get a
backup unit in case anything ever happens to Precious.

I watched the video and it wasn't nearly as ridiculous as I
expected. If it were well-made (which I doubt) it would actually be
useful for some things.

How many times have you had to stir two things at the same time? This a

It looks too top-heavy to me. They show it wading through some beans
but if it were to hit a larger chunk of something it's likely to fall
over, IMO.

I saw the commercial yesterday and noticed that unless it was
animated, the RoboStir stayed in one place and didn't move around the
pan as advertised. Caveat emptor!

I didn't bother with the video because I have HDTV. I've seen the
commercial and it's a piece of junk... not anywhere worth the time
spent watching the commercial.
