it doesn't say his suit is damamaged though just that he is mortally wounded

I think it was because Liam Neeson didn't want to reprise his role... I will try and find a link to back this up.

Maybe, but it's just a voice-over anyway... That scene is key to several parts of the prequel movies - if Neeson didn't want to play ball (and I've heard nothing to suggest he was even asked) then the flannelled one would have tapped one of a multitude of voice artists who do a mean Liam Neeson (what about the dude how did the Clone Wars cartoon). Just seems a very odd editorial decision.
