central SOUTH Carolina? The People? ...How are the people? I may move to N.C. but I once lived in S.C. and I witnessed a traditional mindset in which the perfect environment for power abuses was really the norm. I hated the place where I lived in SOUTH Carolina, but one person has told me that North Carolina- such as the Fayetville area- is pretty well stocked with open-minded people who treat others with basic kindness and equality. In South Carolina I was both hurt and outraged to see- in one particular area- how the abuse of power or authority really kept people down- convinced of their own smallness because of the way so many authority figures were as cold and bossy as they were powerful; such as teachers, cops, landlords, preachers, and politicians. I'd watch them talk down to others all the time, and "smaller" people were afraid of them. I've seen a lot of places, and this one area really stood out for its unequal distribution of authority. The "small", or common, people there seemed unaware of their basic rights as human beings. Since NORTH Carolina is so near to there, I was just concerned about moving into another such place. It was the closest thing to living in the Dark Ages that I had ever experienced. I have a lot of "forward thinking" ideas and I wouldn't be able to fit into a harsh place like that again. It was a place of social oppression, and it was pretty disturbing for me. So, what's the situation in North Carolina? Fayetville? Are they generally more free-minded?

speaking as someone born and raised in the northern great lakes states, who then moved to charlotte, and then columbia

I gotta tell ya I agree with the majority of what you've said... After living in the SC midlands I was deeply shocked and offended at the attitudes of the people is the rural SC midlands...

For most the civil war is still raging on... I've never had issues getting my car worked on anywhere like I have here... I have been called a poiled yankee bastard, for making sure a mechanic put the oil fill plug back in my engine the right way...

I was thrown out of the local walmart for trying to buy underwear on a weekend... and when I made a comment about how backwards I thought they were for allowing beer to be sold, but, not mens underwear, they called the sherriff...

I've tried on more than one occasion to buy or start a new business in SC and been stopped by the dated and idiotic laws on the books...

I've even left one bank, after a teller called me an idiot for wanting to make a deposit into my wifes account, and then telling her she had no business declining my transaction after I proved to her I knew more about the account than the teller did...

People in SC seem so set in there small town 1850's mindset that they simply can not see how backwards they are in relation to the rest of the country...

I am white, but was very surprised at the level of bias against blacks in SC ... I am sure if you look you'll still find whites only establishments scattered around... Which truly is sad, considering, that whites are truly in the minority population wise in SC, especially when you factor in all of he other minorities in the state...

Born and bred Sc residents have now become so narrow minded and obtuse, they fail to see just how backwards theyve become.
