Red Hot Chili Peppers

if I ever have a kid I think it would be neat to name it Dani....but I cant belive they killed her off with Dani California...Do you think we will see her in future songs?

As a kid in the 1970s in California, we picked teams and decided what to do with sing-songie rhymes: "bubble-gum, bubble-gum, in a dish. How many pieces do you wish..." Chili Peppers songs are done in this fun style.

Favorite song is 'Taste the Pain'. It's about addiction and walking away from addictions. Since I've been a prisioner to addiction, this song gives me hope.

Since I think covering songs without giving cred to the original artist is a bad thing, I feel I should point out that this song is a cover of the Ohio Players song by the same name off their classic album "Honey".

Like so many others, I kinda liked RHCP for some of their 80s and 90s stuff. I liked quite a lot of Freaky Styley, Blood Sugar Sex Magik and even a couple of the songs on One Hot Minute .. By the end of the 90s, I had become quite tired of them, so I didn't care much when they released Californication. Since I only listened to it in my frienRAB car (he loved it), I would basically just point out how they'd changed their sound and how I didn't like it, so my opinions about that album were rather anti ..

In hinRABight, I can see that I didn't give them a fair chance and nowadays, I'm prepared to admit that maybe their post-2000 stuff would be cool if I gave it a shot, but they haven't really been interesting for me in a very long time .. maybe I'll find motivation to look into them if they start getting naked on stage again. :D

Or, come to think about it, maybe those days are gone.

edit :

Oh, appearantly they still do it sometimes. Flea appearantly likes to drop his pants now and then.

i don't think anyone is really saying that it lacks funk. what we're saying is it lacks the punk. it lacks the intensity and the edge of their older discs. they sound like seasoned veterans taking care of business instead of hungry rookies trying to get a piece of the pie.

there's no doubt frusciante's influence did change their sound. the difference between his and hillel slovak's styles are subtle but in this case quite significant. i am NOT dissing frusciante here either (hell i even dressed up as him for haloween 10 years ago). as it was said earlier though it seems to be a distinction between those that were already listening to the band when BSSM rolled around and those who were just discovering them.

i think we can all agree BSSM isn't a horrible disc and it most definitely marks the transformational point where the band ceases to be what they were and provides glimpses of what they would become.

what's everyone's take on 'one hot minute'?

They are great musicians. Flea and John really kick a**. Vocally not quite matching that.

I went to see them live and I was very impressed. For me best albums are Californication and By the way. I think they are evolving with each new album so I expect much more from them.

Ridiculous? How?

I find that a lot of their songs stick to the same kind of formula... it's difficult to explain but easy to hear. They tend to use the same rhythm time and time again. I think that's the main problem. And Kiedis sings to the exact tune of the backing music in almost every song instead of moving about a bit to give some variation. Can't Stop would be the best example of the thing I'm talking about here.

They're losing steam. Stadium Arcadium was very poor compared to something like Blood Sugar Sex Magik. I agree with the next one being their last. Then maybe a new greatest hits with a few B-sides or something.

John Mayer is actually a great guitarist, as is evident from live videos. The thing is that he insists on doodling around in bluesy guitar pop rather than reaching his full potential. Having said that, I haven't listened to his newer albums which I've heard are less poppy. Nevertheless, I still enjoy Room For Squares... his bassist is rather good.

I don't have a problem with any of that; I was saying that they brought nothing new to the world. Others would have been mixing things up in the same way but not getting so much exposure.

Regarding the 'certain sound' thing, I realise that they got a lot of variation into each album but when you ask the general public about the late 70s they'll generally think of songs like London Calling and others with a similar kind of energy.

Just picked up Californication and Snow ((Hey Oh)).

I remeraber watching the video to Californicatoin and Otherside when I was like 5 years old lol, I love that album.

And Snow has one of the best guitar melodies I've ever heard!

i see where your coming from but that also seems to be the divide between most of the people who were familiar with the band before 'under the bridge' see it differently.

personally i did like the growth at the time. in retrospect though i don't think much of BSSM has aged well. they got caught up in the whole new CD thing back in 91 and packed it with a bunch of filler to ultra stuff all 72 possible minutes on the disc. breaking the girl / i could have lied / naked in the rain / the greeting song / they're red hot - could all have been omitted.

righteous and the wicked is still two tons of awesome though
