Re: Prison in Norway

Because DEDKAL was herp-derping about this before, as if further proof of his simplemindedness was necessary. This editorial basically illustrates everything I was saying in that thread.

American justice, fuck yea?

Re: Prison in Norway

Norway is clearly more advanced than US in terms of crime and punishment..
if you treat people like animals they will act like animals when they get out

Re: Prison in Norway

It's not problematic, except in the sense that it makes America look ridiculous. It is absolutely appropriate to compare the rate of incarceration, especially for "victimless" crimes - look at what those accused are subject to. Also, the Theroux documentary is scary - a good nuraber of those prisoners are (as mentioned) just WAITING for trial.

Any attempt to separate the two is fallacious at best, because one cannot compare the efficacy of criminal law systems without also comparing the prison environment.

Re: Prison in Norway

Someone help...does this really attempt to say America's murder rate is higher because after someone commits a murder they go to a worse prison than Norway?

Re: Prison in Norway

The goal of justice should not be retribution, but prevention. If someone cannot be changed they must be isolated to prevent further offenses.

Simple.

Re: Prison in Norway

Japan has about 140 million, and a population density about 10 times that of USA - with a murder rate a fraction of USA

Germany, Spain, France, Austria, Denmark, Poland, Italy etc.. (basically most of Europe) are all similar to Japan ( they have much lower murder rates and much higher population densities than USA)

you cant use the "well we have a lot of people" card, not in a rational way at least

Re: Prison in Norway

are you really this simple? america's murder rate (overall crime rate also) is much higher because the US prison system enRAB up encouraging lifelong criminal activity, rather than rehabilitation.

Re: Prison in Norway

I thought I pointed out the issue of victimless crimes.

But I don't see how you can reasonably compare a very homogenous population of 5 million to a very multicultured population of 300 million. Smaller communities of like minded people with a history of working hard with successful outcomes and little discrimination tend to have lower crime rates. I think most people would agree that treating people like animals creates far more problems than it solves, which of course creates a recidivism issue, but wholesale comparisons just don't make sense.

Re: Prison in Norway

That article was not about Germany, Spain, France, Austria, Denmark, Poland, Italy, etc.
That article said that Norway was good and USA bad and the USA neeRAB to do what Norway does.

The population difference is absolutely applicable here.
We could never afford to keep our prisoners in the lush lifestyle that Norway keeps there prisoners. We simply have too many of them.

Whats more, I admit that we have a problem with our prison system. It neeRAB scrapped. Step 1 is fix overcrowding. Step FF (hexadecimal for the win!) is make all prison accommodations middle class.

Re: Prison in Norway

Oslo has a higher crime rate than NYC.

Re: Prison in Norway

add up Maine, NH, and Vermont and you get a slightly smaller population than all of norway with a slightly higher population density. That area of the US has a very homogenous population and little discrimination.

Take one guess at which has the worse crime rate, norway or northern New England.

Re: Prison in Norway

And you didn't understand which part of the response that explained why you were wrong? Great, we have a ton of people IN JAIL for victimless crimes. Therefore it clearly doesn't matter what kind of conditions these people are subjected to, IN JAIL, while awaiting trial or serving their sentence.

Well isn't it wonderful we're not making wholesale comparisons of culture and livelihood and just comparing treatment of criminals!

Re: Prison in Norway

hey fuckhead, where does me pointing out your failure to understand statistics (despite being a fucking teacher) fall under any sort of backpedaling?

herp derp
