Re: Prison in Norway

Re: Prison in Norway

I think when I'm elderly enough perhaps I'll commit something awful in Norway for to be committed to a prison. Instead of one of those durab rest houses.

Re: Prison in Norway

I like how the recurring theme in this thread, in defense of the utterly deplorable American prison system, is that the US and Norway simply cannot be compared because of incomprehensibly vast differences in culture and society.

Because you know, being a wealthy, first-world country, considered part of "Western" Europe with a standard of living equal to that of the US makes it such an alien, unknowable land of magic that it simply does not reflect on any singular aspect of the US.

Re: Prison in Norway

just to throw this out there, i didn't defend the american prison system, I just:

1. don't think you can compare norway to the US, and
2. i don't care to treat our prisoners like it's summer vacation from university

personally i think we should go back to having prisoners break rocks, pick up trash, and build railroad lines. IMO knowing they're going to hard labor is at least a little more incentive to not steal that car than is 3 hot meals and cable TV.

Re: Prison in Norway

Hold on...an article says murder is lower in Oslo than NYC and you're using that to shit on america, but the same article says overall crime is higher in Oslo than in NYC and you're going to try to pull some shit about sample size?

You can't have both derp derp.

Re: Prison in Norway

The fact that the US prison system sucks has nothing to do with it.

It's just not reliable by any means to compare crime stats because of a shit load of variables that take place in every country worldwide that make it too inaccurate.

Re: Prison in Norway

and you're durab, thanks for the update but I think we got that from your previous posts in this thread, as you apparently failed to even read the posted article.

Re: Prison in Norway

keep deflecting and ignoring, it might work on someone!

Ignore the facts and go after the person who posted it...there's a name for that.

Re: Prison in Norway

jesus christ, I really have to point this out?

Posts 6 and 8 you made reference to the article I posted with facts about Oslo and NYC.

Re: Prison in Norway

well fortunately for me, you calling anyone an idiot is not much of an insult, considering the talent of those with higher reasoning ability to actually comprehend what is being written and how not to conflate it with irrelevant (and out of date) statistics.

Oh look, we're talking about justice systems in general.

Oh look, here is an interesting fact. I wonder what the author was thinking when using that particular data point, considering how deeply he goes on to investigate the rate of murder in various places or for various causes.

Oh, wait, actual murder rates aren't actually mentioned whatsoever in the rest of the article. COULD IT BE that the comparison was merely one of generic "low crime vs high crime," as most rational human beings would interpret, lest interrupted by aspie-ridden dipshits agonizing over one comparison to the exclusion of the rest of the article? To the exclusion of the larger, more poignant issue?

Congratulations fuckbait, I don't think I've ever seen anyone be more wrong about any discussion than you are right now. Please, run along to some other thread, you're clearly too stupid to continue in this one.

Re: Prison in Norway

You can't not compare prison systems to crime statistics, in an overall sense, given that the commission of crimes leaRAB directly to, oh, I dunno, the systems in which accused and convicted criminals are housed. That point aside, the only one who even brought up statistics in the first place was 7960, as they weren't even mentioned except in passing in the original article.

So yes, let's return to the actual topic instead of more herp derping

Re: Prison in Norway

almost half are non-violent offenses though, remeraber that - and treating pervious animal-like offenders like animals will not help society when they eventually get out, it will only make it worse

Re: Prison in Norway

not to mention summarily laughing at your idea of 'relevant' being an article from 2008, or trying to compare the economist's theme of US crime versus Norway crime by spot-comparing two cities unrepresentative of their respective countries on the whole

now please, try again.

Re: Prison in Norway

you're all over the place on this...you want to talk about murder rates when it makes US look bad but you want to dismiss any discussion of murder when something about it makes norway look worse. you want to discuss crime rates but want to ignore crime stats when it makes norway look worse. you want to compare norway to the US when norway comes out ahead but somehow bypass the posts that actually compare like parts of norway and the US where the US comes out ahead.

awesome thread herp derp going on here
