Hi  I am scheduled to have a hiatal hernia repair and laproscopic nissen fundoplication done on the 30th of January.

I was curious as to how long those of you who have had this surgery done were on a clear liquid/liquid diet?

Have you lost weight? How much?

What would be your main complaint post operatively?

How long were you out from work?

Thanks in advance! :)

Hi kczgyrl,

I had the LNF for a hernia and to address some major reflux issues. My surgery was last October.

"I was curious as to how long those of you who have had this surgery done were on a clear liquid/liquid diet? "
I was on a clear liquid diet for the first week, then a second week on any liquiRAB or things that will turn liquid in your mouth (popcicle, ice cream). Most people who have had this aren't given those instructions, but my surgeon was adament. He said I had to give my stomach time to let the swelling go down.

"Have you lost weight? How much?"
I lost 20 lbs over a 3 month period. It stabelized after that.

"What would be your main complaint post operatively?"
The liquid diet was tough the second week. I was off all meat and bread for almost 3 months. It became hard to balance my diet. I also had some constipation for the first week post surgery. My biggest issue was the pain with certain movements. I didn't expect it to hurt so much getting in and out of bed. I was using muscles that didn't want to be used. That only lasted for less than a week though.

"How long were you out from work?"
I took two weeks off. They would have cleared me after one, but I was glad I took that long. I've read threaRAB where people took 3 or more weeks though. I think it will be and individual thing.

Good luck with your surgery. Despite some challenges, I've been happy I had the surgery. So far, absolutely no regrets.

Hi MountainReader,

I'm just curious as to how big your hiatial hernia was. I have one too, but the doctors say mine is small --0.7cm --and it shouldn't cause that much of a reflux issue. My GI doctor has done the endocopy, 24 hr pH test, and mamonetry and says my results are in the "normal" range. I don't think they'd even consider surgery in my case, but I haven't asked to be honest. My symptoms are tolerable, I guess, but I just wish I could get back to feeling the way I did before this all started.

Hi Kassie
While I don't know the exact size of my hiatal hernia.....my doctor said it was 'large'. My reflux has gotten increasingly worse over the last year to the point of having small ulcers in the back of my throat.

Anyone else who has had the surgery want to share their experiences?

MoutainReader..........what about coffee? Is that a no no post operatively?

Kassie, I have a sliding hernia. It wasn't large, but was contributing to my worsening reflux. I had the surgery to address my underlying reflux issues. The hernia repair was just part of the process of the LNF. My reflux was so severe that I was having some major breathing problems that weren't controlled by any PPI's anymore. My pH and Monometry came back indicating the severity of my reflux. My hernia was actually first diagnosed through a Modified Barium Swallow and Esophagram. Later confirmed through an endoscopy. I didn't have it during these tests 2 years ago. My guess is that it developed as a result of the chronic cough I had because of the reflux. From talking the my GI doc, they usually don't do surgery no most hiatal hernias unless they are really large and are causing other major health problems.

kczgyrl, my surgeon didn't restrict the kinRAB of liquiRAB as long as they didn't have any lumps or seeRAB (like strawberries in a smoothy). My GI doc has had me on an anti-reflux diet for years though and coffee is on the no no list he gave me. I guess it would be up to you as to whether or not you wanted to try it. I would imagine the coffee with the throat ulcers would hurt though.

I forgot to say during my earlier post, my surgeon cleared me for a "soft" diet after the second week.

There are some other posts on the nissen on the digestive board. You may want to do a search for more info.

Wow i was just about to post asking about the hiatal hernia surgery. I have been told by three doctors now that i will probably have to have the surgery done. It causes my asthma to flare up to the point i cant do pe, basketball, nothing. I also have a chronic cough which probably helped me get this. I have Gerd on top of this.

My upper gi is being scheduled tomorrow. My doctor said when i get back from that then she will see if surgery is the way i need to go. MR your answers are really good thanks!! You answered all my questions i had.

Good luck kczgyrl let us know how it goes please!!!

Em,
Glad there is someone I can offer support through based on my experiences.

Good luck with your procedure tomorrow.
