Let's say you have country A and B
Both of comparable population and land size.
In country A, most of the people live on small farms where they raise most of their staples themselves and barter with neigrabroadors for the rest.
In country B, most of the people live in cities and buy their food from the grocery store.
About the same total amount of food is consumed in both countries but country B has a much higher GDP because of all the grocery store's added value.
Sense, this makes none.
And before you try to tell me this is too gross of a simplification, go check your wiki pages and see when GDP was invented.

Services, from transportation to packaging, to distribution, to marketing etc. Now if you went straight to the farm and purchased $1000 worth of corn then the added value to GDP would be $1000.
You are paying the additional money for the services and labor surrounding its production and distribution.
Food perhaps isn't the best example:
Let's look at say the construction of a chair: the wood purchased would not be counted towarRAB GDP nor the oil/gas used to power the machines, but the value of the chairs produced would be. All of the extra steps that took place before the chair was sold would be reflected in its price.

I think that's a bit unfair, exchange rates have always influenced import and export industries no matter if they are the main currency of the international market as syrabolized by the dollar or a different strong currency like the Euro or even the currency of a small and almost insignificant country such as the kwacha of Zarabia. We also don't even have as rigid of a currency as say China, or Botswana.
