pulled muscle?

Hello,
I'm having a lot of muscle pain over my left shoulder blade. It's similar to the kind of pain I get if I wear a backpack or a bag slung over my shoulder and across my chest for a long period of time while walking, but it's never been this bad, and the pain is usually higher in my shoulder.
I did a lot of walking on Friday with my bag over that shoulder, but I had also done a lot more walking with a heavier bag two weeks earlier without any lasting effects... plus, this didn't really start bothering me until the next day.
The next day, I was in so much pain I started to feel nauseous. It's 3 days later, and I still had to take an Anacin this morning, which helped for a few hours, but now I'm in pain again. It's like a burning pain that radiates to muscles around it, and I have a lot of pain when moving my arm, and a little less pain when sitting in any position. The only time I have no pain is when lying down.
Is this a pulled muscle? Is it possible to get a pulled muscle from just carrying a bag around all day?
Thanks.

You could have pulled amuscle from carrying a bag wrong, especially if you were at it for the entire day. Nothing like going at it for the whole day without getting any rest. It's like adding insult to injury. Your body is now really irritated at you so as a result it's painful-but I'm not telling you anything new, am I?

I would suggest that you take Aleve, which has an anti inflammetory in it, and ice your shoulder down, off and on.Take the Aleve (if you are not sensitive to it) round the clock) so it has a chance to work for a couple of days. This is what the back doctor prescribed for me to take. I would also try the hot packs that are out on the market- ICY HOT I think they are called and see if they help. If they give you relief, good! Try using them..Some gentle stretches will be good. But try not to over do it. You have obviously irritated yourself and your arm is no longer amused...

If this doesn't help and you aren't better in two or three days, get yourself into your doctor and admit defeat and promise not to do it again-whatever it was that you did. I have lived with back issues for more years that I care to admit and am 3 years into a 4 year recovery program from 2 major surgeries so I have had some experience in this area.

Good luck and try to be good to your shoulder for a few days..and try not to carry things off balance on your back from now on,:nono:, OK?

Thanks for your replies.
It's been a week, and it's not any better at all. In fact, it's a little bit worse because now I can't sleep on that side and have trouble finding a comfortable position to sleep in. It feels fine when I first wake up in the morning. But as soon as I start moving around, it gets gradually worse.
Could it be more serious than a pulled muscle, like a tear or something? Should I go to the doctor?

Thanks.

I don't think it's a tear, but it does take time for a muscle to heal....Did your doctor give you any type of time frame? It will feel fine in the morning because you haven't used it all night and you have been still and not moved. But as soon as you move you irritate it again and the pain comes back-that is a given.

If you are still so uncomfotable and the Aleve isn't helping, then go back in and ask him what he suggests. My guess is that he is going to tell you that it takes time for this to heal. He will prbabaly give you an antiinflametory and perhaps offer therapy.

Did you try the patches? And Did you try Aleve or ibuprhen? You need to take something like that round the clock for it to help your muscles heal. What you have doesn't get better overnight..unfortunately.

good luck......and let me know how you feel...

Thanks. I went to the Walk-In because I can never get into my doctor's last minute. She prescribed a muscle relaxer, and told me to use heat patches, as you said. And she did say to use Aleve around the clock also, so I guess I'll try that.
