Popular cartoons that you never got into

Me neither. W.I.T.C.H. was an action/fantasy show starring girls, but it really wasn't all that girly.

Winx Club, by contrast, is very girly, and very toyetic, and yet, of the 2, I liked Winx a tad more. For one thing, no secret identities or double lives (I hate secret identities with the fury of 1000 suns), and also, while it's true that Winx Club is a very girlish show with a very heavy toyetic vibe to it, i'm a fan of the sword-and-sorcery genre and I find the mythology on that show and the world it's set in to be fascinating.

I don't doubt that, but it's fanbase still annoys me. I think a good deal of hatred towards The Batman (an O.K. show) and Teen Titans (one of my favorite shows) came from fans of B;TAS who had a grudge against any DC Universe not created by Bruce Timm.

Some guys and gals are actually secure in their gender, and don't let character gender scare us. If you're truly tough and macho, watching a girl show will not effect your masculinity.

Frankly the only thing I find important in a viewable show is likable characters and fun/interesting stories. Quality isn't guaranteed by the show being full of action & red meat or dating & fashion.

Contrary to mainstream viewer opinions, having a girl as the center character doesn't guarantee a feminine show, just as not all boy centered shows are testosteroned based.

I mean, not all guys are aggressive and macho. Not all girls are passive and feminine. Therefore, assuming the nature of the show, based on the character gender is an exercise in ignorance.

YES THANK YOU
Actually, I don't mind B:TAS too much, but really, the fanbase seems to be off in its own little world sometimes. I'm not thinking so much of this board, I'm thinking of other places - there was one animation forum in particular I used to visit were people just refused to acknowledge that some people might not rate the series as highly as they did. It got crazy sometimes.

I'm having flashbacks to the stinks that got kicked up whenever critics from Japan or the UK or somewhere compiled a "best cartoons evar" list which didn't include B:TAS. Sometimes its fans seem to forget that "one of the best American action cartoons ever made" - not the most convincing claim to fame at the best of times - isn't going to impress those of us who live outside America.

And, really, I think its historical significance tends to be overstated. I'd argue that the subsequent upsurge in the quality of American action cartoons owes more to the anime boom than anything else, and the current situation would probably be much the same had B:TAS never been made.

That said, "you killed Captain Clown... You killed Captain Clown!" is a genius line.

Or maybe I just found the whole thing obnoxiously boring because of its concept. It's no different than any other magical girl show, and as a concept, those are archaic.

This is true. It's probably the same reason I never gravitated to Superjail after the writing fell off near the end of Season 1. OK, everyone dies. Big deal.

Yeah, but character designs and concepts do say a lot more. Which is why I found WITCH utterly pointless.

Popular cartoons that I never got into? I'd say about 95% of all cartoons that were ever considered popular, I guess. Far too many for me to list, anyway...

The Spectacular Spider-Man has pretty simple designs and yet the show has intelligent writing and a good deal of serious moments.

I'll ask what someone else did, did you watch the show or are you just basing everything off designs?

I watched an episode and wondered what the big deal was. There was nothing there that struck me as being outside of the magical girl box of failure.

Most superhero/action/serious cartoons: I've always been more of a "comedy" person with limited patience for drama and continuity. I also never habitually watched Toonami or the Saturday Morning lineups during the 90's.

The difference is that those shows don't have a premise most see as dumb and this show didn't actively differentiate itself from them.

Why are you defending this show so much anyway?

Gurren Laggan. I hate the headstrong characters.

Overall, I avoid cartoons/anime with a ravaging fanbase.

I avoided many cartoons, but I later re-watched them to find them alright.
Foster's
Teen Titans
Full Metal Alchemist
X-Box games
Nightmare Before Christmas
Avatar

I say death to crazy fanboys and fangirls.
