If you mean by common that most people do it, yes, and it's definitely a courtesy.
If you were coming to me I would certainly be there.
When I have worked abroad the company always sent a car.
The funniest one was in Bahrain were the driver had my name on a card....written backwards.

I didn't tell him till later in the week when we knew each other better.
