Please give a educated response to why people need purebred pets?

Paying $1000 plus for a "cute" puppy or kitten is illogical, wasteful, and an incentive for ignorant backyard breeders to knock up otherwise unfit animals. Discuss.

Because their dam and sire were health tested have titles etc. You know what you're getting. You can choose what dogs fits into your lifestyle etc.

Good enough ??

unfortunately, i think it is because to a lot of people, pets are a vanity thing. Accessories, if you will. I personally have owned one purebred dog in my whole life and she wasn't real bright :(

Having lived a few years and getting to know people as i have i believe a lot of it has to do with lack of self respect and the need to look good at all costs.

We all know the Hinze 57 is usually the best dog with the best temperament and the least medical problems. The problem there is they really don't look like anything, just them so how can that be of importance.Hear again for most of us how the dog behaves and not how it looks is what counts, but for the insecure person they need the best looking dog right up front so they have the automatic win.

I wouldn't pay that much, and I like mixed breed dogs and cats more than purebreds, with the exception that when I have a house with a large garden, I would really love to have a doberman. I love dobies' temperaments, build, and colouring, and the build is important to me because I want my dog/dogs (if my husband would like one as well and we can give them both the homes they need) to be runners with me. Running dogs generally need to have long enough legs and a longer snout for breathing purposes when they're out for a longer run, so it limits the breeds that are options for me. My dad did actually adopt his current dobie Drake from a humane society though :)

I also wouldn't pay for a cute puppy or kitten, I'd pay for the cute puppy or kitten that will become a great dog or cat in the future. I guess I should admit to a weakness for siamese cats as well, but I grew up with two so I'm biassed!

I don't NEED purebreds at all - but I prefer to know the guidelines of what my dog will be like as an adult. We also will not adopt from the RSPCA due to my mum's dog almost dying in there from the terrible care, so we don't really have much choice. My puppy is a Lab/Poodle mix (parents bought her) and it is so much harder with her because of the mixed attitude. Nobody NEEDS purebreds, but some people may prefer having something they know will suit you. If you got a total mix, you'd have no clue how big it could get, its exercise levels, shedding, etc.. With purebreds, it's easy enough to tell.
FYI : Not all purebreds come from BYBs yano.

it makes sense if the person plans on having their dog work (ie, buying a border collie for herding that comes from a long line of working border collies, buying a husky for sledding whose lineage includes iditarod winners) or entering them into competitions in which only purebred dogs are allowed to compete (ie, field trials) but the fact is most people aren't. the only sense i see in it is knowing the parentage of the dogs if it comes from a responsible breeder who is health testing and training their dogs, but most people don't even care about that. they just read a breed description and say "i want that!" irrespective of the personalities of the actual dogs their pup is the offspring of.

i also think it is asinine and moreover there are dogs dying due to the backwards notion that a purebred dog makes a better companion than a mutt. in either case, it is irresponsible to select a dog based on their breed rather than their individual personality. dogs are individuals, there are vague assumptions you can make (ie: retrievers have ball drive) but they apply to a dog's group much more so than a particular breed, and you can tell what group a mutt belongs to with little difficulty anyhow.

I think the answer falls into three categories - Ignorance impatience and vanity,

Ignorance: people think purebred animals are healthier and more reliable, in terms of temperament. In fact, by definition, a purebred is inbred and has the potential of having disorders mutts never get. And breeders have the same problem of diseases that come from overcrowding that shelters have.

Impatience comes from not being willing to take the time to get to know different animals before choosing one. It's quicker to just order one out of a catalog.

Vanity is about both looks and status, It comes from extreme insecurity. They feel so crummy about themselves that they need a dog to make them look good.

I've also known a number of people who were racist and applied the same mentality to their pets.

Legitimate reasons? that's a lot harder!

Because people pay good money and expect to earn money back for putting those pets through shows and expositions and all that crap. There is no way to justify that behavior, I don't get pet shows at all, it doesn't matter what a pet looks like at all. And a purebred pet is not necessarily more cute than a mixed-breed, and purebreds can be crabby and high-strung. I see no sense to caring about purebred pets, it should just matter how you connect to an animal.
