Playing converted videos on your S60 -- Read inside

NothingBetter

Seems to happen with large files. Best way I found around this flaw when I was using it was to split your movie into smaller files but that adds work for nothing

So I'm playing around today with converting video (trailers right now)... Trying smart movie which sux, and using another app called SMART. Which is a free video converter and creates video that can be played from the Gallery on my N90.

The quality is much better from Smart, but the file size is 10x as big.

The source is a 20mb trailer from Apple/quicktime/trailers.
In smart movie, it ends up around 2.7mb but is terribly blocky, looks like its more for low res displays - and not the high res display of my N90.
The higher resolution file, which looks GREAT on my N90 is about 13mb's after converting... shows up in the Gallery and plays in Real Player

Whats more important? Size or Quality?

I eventually want to have a thread with links to already converted video's here for all the share... IF PEOPLE WOULD BE WILLING TO CONTRIBUTE.

Have you tried playing with the myriad of settings in Smartmovie's Converter? I have several movies that were converted for my 6682, played one on my N80 (office space) the other day on the drive home and didn't notice blockiness or anything. I haven't tried converting for the N80 yet.

Btw, i followed your settings exactly, experimented a bit more and eventually increased the video bitrate to 520. The vidoe quality is even better as opposed to what you posted, since the video would get a bit pixellated at times.

The only drawback is that the filesize increased by about 35-40%. It's something that i can live with though.

But thanks for the settings

Use a lower bitrate. My e61 can't even handle 512 in 3gp. Start out at 256 (combined audio and video), if it handles that ok, go up from there.

Edited to add: That SUPER thing produces a fairly nice 320x240 video at 64k in mp4 at 15fps, at least for animation. It macroblocks a bit during motion, though.

If anything is working in Quicktime, it can easily be converted into the same type of .mp4 that the video recorder in the N90 makes. 352x288 cif mp4 I think, dont remember exactly, but only with Quicktime Pro though.

I find Smartmovie to be much better due to all its options:
Resume, zoom, rotate, 352x416 resolution video, etc.

I had tried that already. Even if I disable sound, use 256kbps, it stays around tops 15FPS, in either low or high resolution. Then if I encode it into low resolution, and disable SmartMovie Player stretching (by pressing 6), it gets fast 25FPS.

Before someone asks me, I don't use any crappy software in the background of the phone.

Some N90 user that can run a video smoothly at 25FPS please send me a sample that runs good in your N90 so I can test it here.

toast........i don know if you are using the old smart movie or what but the new one with the settings for the n90 have been quite useful
having said that i will be looking into smart becuase i want an mp4 file so i can play it on my n90 with the screen set in video mode

The advantage of this application over smartmovie is you can control the settings you want. So you choose you find the sweet spot you like for size to quality ratio or even change it from one video to another and mix and match.

This software is pure junk compared to Super. It is really optimized for SE phones only with very little flexibility for other phones / screens.

Not sure why anyone would want anything other than Super. This software is just awesome. I've converted nearly 50 clips ranging from music videos to tv episodes to full length movies and they have all played flawlessly on my N80... fluid, smooth video at CIF (352x288) resolution and in sync audio.

Smartmovie is nice but has very little flexibility and is virtually unuseable on an N80 (and probably most S60V3 devices) due to a gradual loss of audio / video sync in a long clip.

I have tried virtually every conversion program in existence and stuck with Super. As far as I'm concerned, it has no competition at this time.

Try changing the bitrates in Smart Movie. SM is anti-intuitive in that the more bitrate you use, the smoother (and of course less blocky) the video is, until you get to the point where the phone's CPU and memory interface can no longer keep up with the playback. You'll have to experiment a bit.

Oh, well yes, I was going to learn to live with that quality, even when it's a little skippy. However, when I saw some people say in this thread that they managed to run at 25FPS and smooth quality, I'd like to be able to do that too...

Perhaps if you created the file with the full screen resolution of the device it would work better, since SM wouldn't have to scale the output. That, of course, presumes that you're having the results you desire with other resolutions when it's not stretching the output to full screen.

wonder does my card make a difference..just got an new mini sd card and seems like the video lags EVEN more than my last card. too bad my last card crashed and then eventually stopped working for good

I agree. Ever since the v3.10+ converter was released, SM has been great with my N90. I have the settings at the highest quality. Very smooth video running at 25fps. I only wish the SM converter had the ability to rip DVDs like the Xilisoft converter.

I agree..Super all they way..i tried that sony one...but no control over things like Super...i got what seems to be good settings..very clear and smooth video, i got a 2gb card so i dont care about the video size too much..if you guys want i can post a screenshot of my Super settings...

let me know..
