Playing converted videos on your S60 -- Read inside

This was the file linked in my sig (see previous post): 402 Kbps Fire clip

Here are some other ones from the K800 video thread: 355 Kbps Final Fantasy clip & 374 Kbps Central Station clip

All of these have been confirmed to work on the K790/K800, but I'm wondering if they'd work on the N73 as well.

It requires rtsp to stream, so if you're stuck with only HTTP streaming it won't work. You might check to make sure that it doesn't work when tethered to your laptop, but I doubt you'll have any more luck.

I'll post some direct links here in a minute so you can at least see what I'm talking about when I say that the Xilisoft converter (and everything based on it) sucks.

Edited to add: Gee, the AVS video converter produces much prettier output at decent bitrates, but the resulting file can't be hinted for streaming by Quicktime. I'll have to try 3gp later.

I remembered the problem:
If the source video is smaller than 352x416, it will turn out ugly and blocky.

If the source is QVGA, use Smartmovie to convert to QVGA or smaller.
Here's a video:

I use SUPER and i convert all my vids to 352x288 MP4. They play great. The new version of Smartmovie seems to work cool too.

I tried one of the videos (I figured mp4 wouldn’t work on E61) the first time it froze my E61 and I had to reboot. The 2nd time it just wouldn’t play so no these videos will not work unless a 3rd party app comes out to play mp4 files or you convert them to 3gp for the Realplayer app or use Smartmovie to convert them to be playable via the smartmovie app on the phone.

If you're making SmartMovies on your Mac, look at:

ffmpegX (analogous to the SUPER app mentioned here)
VisualDub
MPEG Streamclip (either with DivX Pro 5.1.1/MP3 or paired with another app like ffmpegX to handle the MP3 audio when using 3ivx or XviD, app is free)
D-Vision (free)

If you're making movies for the built-in player, check out

MPEG Streamclip
VisualDub
iSquint (free)
Handbrake (for DVD sources, free)
& others...check versiontracker or macupdate.

SUPER... not smart. My bad!
I obviously had a brain fart when I started typing this........... smart movie or SUPER video converter... SO SORRY EVERYONE...

What I like about SUPER is I can see them in the standard gallery, and they look pretty good, but they are HUGE!

Hmm, I don't know about the N90, but on my phone, I can see Smartmovie AVI's inside the gallery as well since it's registered in the phone as a video file. If I click on the file inside gallery, Smartmovie will launch to play the file.

I prefer using Super also to the Smartmovie app. I find it pixelizes video too much compared to Super

Here are my settings (optamized for 320x240 E61 screen) if anyone is interested (click to enlarge) I put red arrows in the places the settings need to be changed to take advantage of the E61 full screen mode

Here are some vids I made for my E61 with these settings. They simply need to be put on the phone and enjoyed

Quick question: I have a 6682 and I just try to play the 2nd renaissance. There was sound but no video. Realplayer was the program in use. Smartmovies can not seem to play this file. Is this video not possible with my 6682?

OK, thanks for testing it. That's a bit of a downer.

Which video, BTW? I think the best one to demo is the 355 Kbps Final Fantasy one, since it looks the best and is the lowest bitrate of the three.

(Click for video: QuickTime .mp4 355 Kbps, including 96 Kbps AAC audio)

update on my question above. It seems taht on my PC desktop, the Nokia multimedia player will actualy play the above files, but ON MY Phone (6682), it wont show teh videos. What is going on?

I tried the first one since it was the smallest of the 3 and I was running low on memory lol. No big deal though I was able to convert your files to 3gp with the Super software without having to convert it prior.

The first file (Fire) when converted using a video bit rate of 432 (which is decent quality) 23.98 frames per sec came out to 14.531MB which isnt to bad considering the original file is about 10.5MB.

If I remember correctly the video bitrate may need to be lowered for it to work on some older series 60 phones.

Take a small clip and keep lowering the bitrate untill it plays on the phone. Then you can find the sweetspot.

As for smartmovie it can only play coverted avi so these files wont work on it and also on the older series 60 realplayer you cant view movies fullscreen if I remember(correct me if im wrong) but in these cases smartmovie still works pretty well and you can view fullscreen in landscape mode which is what I used to do on my 6682 and 6630.

You can also use the nokia multimedia converter but its never as good looking as other apps out there
