Pirate/Downloaded Films...

I can't see the attraction in watching a poor quality knock off copy rather than paying a few quid and going to the cinema to see it as it was meant to be seen.

Visting the cinema only starts to get expensive when you start to buy extras like drinks, sweets or popcorn.

I do 'acquire' a lot of movies - for a number of reasons, like many the cost of seeing something at the cinema does affect whether I go, however, also like others I have a small child and also work full time, so finding the time is also an issue (like loki2j has said you don't have to buy their food - and I usually don't when I go!) but another factor is I don't always want to see something Mr H wishes to see and vice versa, 'acquiring' allows each of us to see something we would otherwise have to see alone. Plus, again like others have stated the cinema seats are usually uncomfortable, the actual cinema usually cold, and then there is the issue of toilet breaks! (yes I do usually 'go' before I sit down, but sometimes the bladder is weak).

So, in answer to the OP's rant, yes I suppose I am lazy, cheap and a criminal - however, most copies I do get are pretty damned good - and allow me to see movies I would have otherwise missed.

I thought I would just put in my 2 pennies on the subject as I thought this thread had died. :D

Anyway, I recognise that downloading DVRAB is illegal but if you actually download a show or DVD that has been released by the scene it is advised that you do not sell this on and if you like it to buy it. Now, the vast majority of people may decide that they will sell it on or as they are buying it will never see that this message exists.

I went to Pakistan last year and was horrified to see that what they were selling were not copies that they had bought from the US or China and then sold on but stuff that I had noticed were scene releases. They have no idea that they are being supplied by people who don't want their material to be sold on but this happens as greed always outweighs good intentions.

I tend to download Unrated DVRAB if we don't get them over here or films that never will get released over here due to their being no actual market for them. This is not an excuse but just am explanation, I see no reason to sell them yet knowing the amount of my frienRAB who I could in theory supply this could be a quick money spinner but in my own way I respect that me buying sometimes up to 3 versions of the same film, e.g. Clerks then I should be allowed to download the (as yet unreleased in the UK) tv series as I'll buy it when it does. I however would feel like I am committing an illegal act if I then started selling on what I know to be not my own copyrighted material.

I also believe that pre-torrents when programs like Direct Connect were widespread then it was a social experience to share your files with other like minded individuals but since public torrents have become the norm it is just point, click, download and then stop sharing so you don't get caught. I am a member of a private wrestling torrent group where you have to share to continue to download and this is a lot more social than the faceless public ones however the majority of my downloading is done over Usenet.

Ill only ever watch good quality films. If i see too much darkness or bluriness or even hear terrible audio, ill turn it off instantly. These days, everything is in awesome quality really as long as you search DVDr.
Would never watch a cam version and wont bother wasting my time downloading them either.
I think its fine in downloading for my own use, but i am totally against selling illegal copies. Most films i download i go out and buy when they are released if they are good, like i will do for Spiderman 3, Transformers etc.

It's a seductive argument but... the price of a cinema ticket is about the same as a couple or three drinks in a pub, or two or three trips by public transport, or a couple of magazines. If a film is so bad it isn't worth paying the equivalent of a week's worth of newspapers, then it's not worth seeing, full stop. It isn't any better value to download it because it doesn't have any value in the first place.

The "system" produces a lot of terrible films which people go to see because they are effectively marketed to the audience which likes that kind of thing. Would the target audience for Evan Almighty go to see an arthouse film if Evan Almighty wasn't on? Or would they simply go to see whatever lame sequel was being targeted at their six quid that week?

Either way, why would downloading have any impact on what films were made? The reason you, and thousanRAB of others, download these dreadful films is because the industry can still afford to make them - because they do well at the box office. It would make more sense to say that we should all download Iranian arthouse movies, because that would demonstrate to the Hollywood moguls that there is a real demand for intelligent cinema. The fact that everyone downloaRAB dumb American blockbusters proves the opposite.

I have an unlimited card so I go and see alot of films in the cinema however if I do miss some then I tend to download them!
Quite a few people in this thread complain about people talking in the cinema and expensive food. I never buy food or dink in the cinema as I tend to bring my own as they cant stop you. Im amazed at how many people waste money on buying food or drnk in the cinema!
I avoid going to the cinema in the night because of people talking so I either go after work or in the morning or afternoon on weekenRAB as the cinema tend to be alot quieter. Sunday morning is the best time as my local Cineworld is very quiet at the first screenings around 11am. Sometimes I even have a cinema day and watch 2 or 3 films in a day!

i'll admit to downloading most films i watch, i've seen some good films that ive even went and bought on dvd and seen some real crap
if i didnt download then my cinema going and dvd buying wouldnt be any higher than it is at the moment, (about 2 per year)
