Phones Dying Using NSU - More Often Than Not?

I read a lot of reports that a phone dies while updating thru the Nokia Software Updater. Is this actually something we should be worried of? Or are the cases few and far in between?

I mean with updates lately taking almost 100MB, thus taking longer, it would suck if it kills the phone.

I'm very worried about this. And I also think the cases are much more than "few and far"

But what causes the disconnect that leads to failure? Cause the cable seems very securely attached to the phone.

I did hear that very tiny shake might trigger the failure.

Well some reported that their internet connection got cut off but with no ramifications or problems. So I guess its something else. Maybe a bug by itself?

And mostly, its N80.

Hi, I tried the NSU myself and several times my connection to the internet got cut-off, but this isn't a problem as nothing is being written to the phone, so that is not a critical part. Its the part after the download where things start to get critical.

Personally I think it's the cable connection...its just not secure, or in other words tiny, very tiny movements can have an effect on it.

And I hope there is a fix for this, because the idea of being able to update your phone is nice, but it is risky. And I thought going from Phoenix to NSU all the risks would be polished out.....and I was wrong

Another thing I hate about NSU is the fact that if the update fails (and phone is still working) you can try again, but instead of caching the HUGE download, you are asked to download it alllll over again.

If the risk of updating through via NSU would be polished out completely or atleast a 95% succes rate, that would be a great christmas gift from Nokia to us

I think this is a very important issue, good thread!
And Nokia needs to address this, and fast! The best solution is to add FOTA like N80 and get it over with, but untill than I hate fact I have to sit there for 20 min hoping that the cable/ doesn't disconnect or the power goes out....
This is unacceptable. I agree that NSU is fairly safe and I use the term lightly, but I have been hearing too much failed cases for comfort.
I especially remember the E70 cases, where many of them got bricked.

I own two Nokia data cables....one came with my 6682 and the other with my N73.

I have noticed that the one that came with my N73, when I have it connected via cable, any small touch can disconnect it. Seems like there is a small play that causes a disconnection. However, the cable that came with my 6682 works perfect on the N73. Once it is connected, it won't disconnect....meaning there is no play to drop its connection.

They always say the same thing: bring the dead phone to an authorized nokia centre.
But what about most of us that don't have a Nokia centre in sight.....for 100.000 of miles.
I don't think that is considered a "fix", the thing should work, thats it! In my opinion....especially after paying freaking $700 for a N93

This is no different than using Phoenix. I've used it twice personally and once online walking a friend through with no troubles. However, as you know there were several cases where someone "bricked" their phone, and it usually turned out that they picked it up or something. How difficult is it to not touch your phone for 20 min? I mean, really.

i have already tried NSU 3x on my e61 and never had any problem...

there is also some report that NSU will be incorporated to the next update of the NPCS... and i heard it will be out soon...

If 1,000,000 people used NSU, and 100 bricked their phones, how many of the 100 will go post about their experience online, and how many of the others will?

The cable that comes with my E61 is the crappiest cable that I've ever received with any phone ever. The slightest movement will cause the phone to disconnect from whichever mode it's in at the time, and is the reason for a lot of failed firmware updates I suspect.
