Pans Labyrinth

i didnt think it was that gory - it was the suggestiong more than anything else, such as the captain's little speech as he got all his torture instruments ready..

mercedes the maid was fantastic, when she said 'this isnt the first time ive gutted a pig' i nearly screamed with joy :-0

I just got around to seeing this tonight and it lived up to all my expectations!
I have to agree with some of the previous posts though about it being violent. I loved the way they mixed the real world and the fantasy world as well!

Firstly, I didn't know it was a spanish film, my friend dragged me along with him to see it, he is a film person and even he didnt realise it was subtitled. I'm not saying it should have been plastered everywhere, just that most of the time on the listings it says subtitled in brackets after the name or description.

With regarRAB to the 'not expecting subtitles' putting me off, I didn't want to go see a film where i had to constantly read it, i could have read a book if id wanted that.

With regarRAB to the film generally, i just think that it was a bit muddled, not really my thing, and the violence was not always necessary. I did however think that the fairies/monsters or whatever they are were creative.

Again, this just my opinion, and i can respect that you thought it was good so please respect that i didn't like it.

Bought the DVD earlier today, not long finished watching the film. I really liked it.

I knew it wasn't going to be a happy-go-lucky fairytale story, but some of the violent scenes really shocked me.

A comment made by Mercedes though, left me thinking that the faun was going to turn out evil... I kept waiting for that moment.

Very good film, definitely recommend seeing it, if you haven't already.

I liked it but was expecting more from the comments I've read. It's brilliant, though there wasn't enough of the fantasy element for me. Some scenes were terrific, and I'm glad it won an award for best cinematography. I agree don't let the subtitles put you off, it makes no difference to enjoyment of the film.

8/10

I found some scenes really disturbing too!
Loved the whole fantasy escapism side of things, but I found the violence a bit hard to watch at times.

Loved the whole thing though, thought the acting was fantastic.

I want to add my praise as well. What a brilliant film! It was so satisfying to see an adult fantasy film. I had to look away at certain places (the real world is more disturbing than the underworld!). I loved the 'sound' of the film as well, it being in Spanish.

I know at my cineworld they told me at the box office when I asked for a ticket. Kind of like, before we sell you this we ought to warn you that it is subtitled, are you sure you still want to see it.

Personally, I think subtitles are FAR better than dubbing. You get the real voices, the real emotion, the subtlety of the performance.

And, after I've seen a subtitled movie, I remember all the scenes in English anyway...

I also felt that for a film like Pan's Labyrinth the subtitles weren't a big deal. It wasn't a dialogue heavy film, with much of the focus being on the atmosphere and cinematography.

I saw this film tonight and thought it was amazing - the best film I've seen in ages! I was a bit dubious originally about it being subtitled but I soon forgot I was even reading after the first few minutes. I thought the pale man(?) was seriously scary - proper nightmare material!! Especially when he was just sat there and you were just waiting for him to move!! Great film though...even if my sister did have a good old blub at the end!!

Great point. I've never been too fussed with subs in a film. Also agree with the poster that I prefer subtitles over dubbed voices as you get the real emotion and the actor's voice how it was intended rather than a dubbed voice overdramatising the scene.

I didn't have a problem with the subtitles in this film, as everyone else has said, you forget about them after a while. The only time I've had trouble following subtitles was with "Nightwatch" (the russian film) I think it was becasue everything was going so quickly, it was hard to keep up. I ended up turning on the dubbing, it was cool though, becasue it was russian accents doing the dubbing, so it didn't take you out of it all too much.

Spoiler!

______________

Just got back from seeing it. What an amazing film! I highly recommend it, but some people might find it a bit harrowing.
