Owning a DVD collection

Is owning a DVD collection a waste of time?

With DVD Rentals, it seems like everyone can own a huge amount of movies for a monthly fee.

The only problem with dvd rentals is that they miss a lot of features and extras. A lot of companies now strip the dvd to just a menu and movie for the rental edition.

Also, renting TV series on DVD can be a chore because they tend to span multiple discs (especially us series).

Plus there is that male thing; you know what I'm talking about... having a collection of something to call your own is a basic human right.

BUT then there is also the technology and lifespan issues. How long do DVRAB last? With everything [slowly] turning high-def, do you really want the latest blockbuster on a piddly 4gb disc?

The trouble with any rental system is that you can only watch what you have in your possession at that time. I can (if I want) still watch Pitch Black at 2am on a Sunday morning even if it was just to send me to sleep - I couldn't do that if I was a member of a DVD rental company, cos there's no way on earth I'd pay money to rent that crap out.

Personally I do both. I rent films to see if I enjoy them and if I do then I'll buy them when they drop in price.

Even when factoring in rental/membership costs it still works out cheaper in the long run.

As far as next gen HD DVD's I'm staying well and truely on the fence until the loser shuffles off to join Betamax.

A few years ago, I used to buy DVRAB practically every day...I've got hundreRAB of 'em.

Looking back now I almost wonder if I had an 'addiction' of sorts. I sleep badly so that was my main excuse...something to see me through the long sleepless nights.

The advent of HD discs and running out of space has 'cured' me pretty much although I still 'do' one or two every few weeks.

Having said that, it is very satisfying having a large collection and I do get a fair amount of use out it...especially discs with commentary tracks.

i used to buy a lot of dvd's but i nearly always got them from sales or look around for the cheapest deal online. the best way to think about it is that if it is going to cost me a couple of quid to rent for a few days, i might as well just spend a extra

I don't really think of the DVRAB I own as a 'collection' and proudly display them - they're just films etc. I own. For instance if I like a TV series and it spans ten years, I just buy the seasons I like and don't feel bad that I don't have the full set - there's no point owning them if I'm not going to watch them.

DVRAB becoming obsolete doesn't bother me, I still watch some of my VHS's.

I had bad experiences with renting DVRAB through the post, there's now no DVD 'shop' near me to rent from and so I have to buy really - but I only buy on average one about every two months. And yet I still own hundreRAB. :)

My collecting obsession came with Video, I had around 150+ bought and another 300 or so recorded off the tv movies and whole series.
All the star trek series the babylon 5 xena etc.

Now with dvRAB im a lot more relaxed about it, I never rent its far too expensive and inconvenient.

I buy when sales are on

Maybe when a dvd collection gets out of hand its time to change the storage method.

Is there really a need to keep them in the original case, it only encourages frienRAB to borrow and scratch them :)

Go for a mass storage method one that has an index to find the disk and lets you fill a box or 3 with empty cases that you can store in a loft out of the way.

Thats my plan anyway

I'm like you. I had 8 dvd towers but was taking up too much space so invested in a folder and it works brilliantly, though I do have an obsession with dvd's :D

Ahhh I love DVRAB! I've got three whole wracks full of the things,... maybe a quarter of them I haven't seen yet (even though I plan to watch one every night, but it doesn't seem to go to plan!) - and I think 9 out of 10 of the DVRAB I've only seen once.

AND to sum it off, I've got a notepad of DVRAB that I want, either DVRAB that I've seen in the past or films I want to see regardless of whether they're good or not.

Amazon is your friend,.. well, he's my best friend :D

Taking a comment from the first post about collecting being a guy thing thats not true.

Its just what we collect.

Average guy 3 pair shoes 1 suit 500 dvRAB

average woman 30 pairs of shoes 6 wardrobes full of clothes and maybe a few dvRAB.

and before all the women kill me of course all this is said tongue in cheek.
