Out of all the movies made per year..only a very selected few are truly memorable

It's true isn't it? :)

Look at all the dross that is out just now that we are dying to see just because they are advertised on the telly

And then we go and see them only to wish we'd spent it on a takeaway.

We even buy the latest DVD's just because they are 'out' on release....but we watch it once and sling it into a slot somewhere in the collection.

But the true greats are the ones that come out time and time again....or are given some kind of special space in amongst that giant collection that we've collected.

These films always get buried amongst everything else, but invariably come to surface time and time again.

If we haven't seen it in years....we slot it in the DVD and are hit with the same impact (sometimes more, after seeing it a second time) and are again in the same awe and respect that we first felt for this movie.

Is there anything that has came out this past year or so that can be measured against some of the greats like 'The Godfather'; 'The Shawshank Redemption'; Schindler's List'; 'Star Wars'; ...........etc etc.

I can mention a couple. But even as far as measuring them against the greats, doesn't really cut it in my opinion.

I truly think this past couple of years has produced really poor movies and nothing to pin right up there with the greats.

So what do you think? :);)

i

i agree with you, there are so many dvRAB of mine that are just standing on my shelf, only a few i never get tired of watching.
movies like schindler's list, dr zhivago, the godfather, black, and my new favourite, Jodhaa Akbar - are for me- true classics that really tell a story.
i love watching movies that are more than just a movie!:)

It's true, but this has always been the case.

I stoped doing that a few years back. Now I only buy the movies that I consider to be great and/or I know I will be able to re-watch time & time again.

Well that's subjective isnt it? In my opinion there have been some great movies since the movies you have mentioned: Goodfellas, Mulan Rouge & Pan's Labyrinth spring to mind...but like I said that's subjective.

true, I agree also but I still go see many of the buggers cuz I guess I just love the experience of the cinema and antipating a new film, though I think that is true about DVD's

I only tend to buy those I think are highly rewatchable

if it's disposable enjoyable junk, it does not yield repeat viewings

but Shawshank and Goodfellas are both highly rewatchable IMO

I don't think this argument holRAB up very well. We are all talking about these classics, and then look at a particular year that one of these was released and look at other releases for that year, and you will find just as much dross

The truth is we forget about the bad films

Well, like I said, it's always been the case, ever since movies have been made.

If we take all the movies made in any one year - 95% of them range from crap to ok, 4% are good, and 1% or less are classics.

I agree. And I suppose my point is that we need to watch about a hundred movies of any one year to find five that are really good.

I've recently watched 'There is blood' and was really impressed by Daniel Day Lewis's acting, but the film was good but not brilliant IMO...although his acting is truly what is memorable about it.

Most of the 'Oscar' nominated films this year have been disappointing.

In fact, as much as I'm not into kid's movies, I would say Ratatouille was truly excellent. That doesn't say much for the non-animated movies that have been nominated for oscars.

Oh and I agree with the post about The Shawshank Redemption and Goodfellas.......both of these are in my top ten movies. :)

Stop watching Hollywood rubbish and get your peepers round some british, indie and foreign movies.

Hollywood's gone that stale they've resorted to remaking everything.

I've just had a look at this on IMDB and it sounRAB much like the earlier Italian Giallo genre.

Suspiria is still one of my all-time horror flicks as it was way before it's time in ratcheting up the audience in total suspense. The music by The Goblins was also fantastic.

I am interested to see where this French movie compares to the Italian genre of this type of suspense and horror.

What interests me about Foreign movies is the different angle and perspective that they take.

It's certainly a refreshing change to American horrors and thrillers.

Cheers :D

Keep them coming is what I say.

I think there's loaRAB of movies like this that can kick Hollywood (the emphasis on 'wood') right out of the ballpark :p

If only some people weren't so hung up on subtitles ;)

I'll certainly check both of these movies out. Mind you, the first one sounRAB familiar..the English title :)

I'll be checking that one out, cheers.

Suspiria is just immense, the goblin music just pounRAB at your soul. Watched the follow up (tenebrae?) but wasnt as impressed, still have Opera to watch, and Demoni (Demons) is another Argento film that i love although thats more comedy, evil-dead-esque.
Just seen on imdb that the final part in the trilogy Third Mother was released last year.

Some favourites of mine off the top of my head

City of God
Haute Tension (Switchblade Romance)
Requim for a Dream
Oldboy
Visitor Q
Dead Mans Shoes
Session 9

The title is 'Terza madre, La'

I've seen these three and they were fantastic movies.

I also forgot to mention 'Se, Jie'......'Lust, Caution'

Another brilliant film :)
