OT:My first memory of Elizabeth Taylor

It was 1974. I was 12 years old. I was in the 6th grade. We had a after
school movie program where for 25 cents you could watch a movie after school
once per week on a Friday. One movie I went to attend was Ivanhoe. I knew
it had something to do with Robin Hood, a movie with Errol Flynn I had
recently watched on TV and so I wanted to see it. So I am in a classroom
with about a dozen boys and girls watching the film and suddenly Elizabeth
Taylor made he first appearance in the film. She was the raven haired
Rebecca, daughter of Isaac the Jew. At that moment a hushed gasp from all
the boys, and even a few of the girls, filled the room. We were all
captivated by her incredible beauty. So much so that it surprised this
little group of young children. She was that stunningly beautiful. That
was my first memory of Elizabeth Taylor. And one I remember very fondly.

The only thing this has had to do with food is the fact I lost my lunch
reading it.

Elizabeth who?

1974 I was in the Army. '75 was my first deployment overseas.
What did you have on you lunch during 7th Grade?

I liked Elizabeth in "Cleopatra", in the scene where she's lying nude
on a massage table. As "Cleopatra" was a 1963 movie, I guess the
censorship was a little more relaxed than it had been previously, but
still you could not see anything "naughty". But OMG she had a
beautiful body too!

Yeah, that was a good scene. No wonder Richard Burton fell for her.

She raised, personally, more than 350 million dollars for AIDS research.
That was at the time more than the government spent. She was special, above
the Hollywood fray and now all we have is Lindsay Lohan and the rest of the
alcoholic, drugged-out, jailbird party animals.

What a dimwit you are. Not all of Hollywood is alcoholic, drugged-out,

I'm with you up to here.

We've got Lindsay & Charlie-- Elizabeth's generation had Sinatra &
his Rat pack.

OTOH-- We also have Sean Penn, who is *still*, very quietly, in Haiti.
And we've got George Clooney teaming up with Laura Bush to help out
the folks in Sudan. . . and hundreds more stories.

The tabloids don't cover them much, but there is a whole lot more
Hollywood money & time going towards good works than drugs and
shenanigans.

I can't tell you who is being covered by the tabloids. I don't bother
with them. I am not interested in regular gossip and am even less
interested in celebrity gossip. I also have a lack of interest in movies
that are so lame that they need a celebrity in starring role in order to
attract viewers.

National Velvet. I was probably 6-7 when Mom took us 3 kids to a matinee
(older sister watching us youngers) and went shopping.

A gracious lady who did her best to help.

(not picking on you, Jim) Who gives a shit about Hollywood? These people
make far too much money. I don't care what the Lindsay Lohan's or Charlie
Sheen's of the world are doing. It trickles down to what WE as a people are
doing. Help your local community. Frankly, it pisses me off so much
attention is paid to these people. They get all the media attention for
their bad acts then public acts of contrition (heh).

What about us regular folks contributing to a local food bank or animal
shelters? No publicity there because we aren't "celebrities". Screw them.
You can do so much more good by helping locally in your own community.

How can you forget a movie called "Lassie Come Home" when the canine
lead role is named Bill? There were a number of strange things about
that movie, like where young Liz is searching for her in a field in a
fine day and then it cuts to here sailing on a stormy lake.

I would never describe her as "beautiful," and certainly not,
"stunningly beautiful." The best that I can say about her physical
appearance is that she aged well.
Compared to Grace Kelly--from the same era--she was a hag.
Other actresses who were "stunningly beautiful" include Barbara Eden
(who aged even better) and a host of younger actresses, some of whom
may not have retained their looks as well.

1. Kirsten Dunst - stunning in The Virgin Suicides
2. Sarah M. Gellar
3. Teresa Palmer
4. Rebecca De Mornay
5. Olivia Hussey
6. Shiri Appleby (OMG)
7. Portia de Rossi
8. Nikki Charm (an adult film actress)
9. Kim Alexis (model rather than actress)
10. Josie Maran (also a model)

Elizabeth Taylor would be way down on the list.
