Open Table

As much a I travel, I'm surprised I've never used this service before.
I'd read it mentioned on Chowhound, but just never investigated it.
Wow.. nice! I just scored a table at Topolobampo in Chicago on May 5th.
I would actually prefer to be next door at Fronterra Grill, but they
don't take reservations there. I'm in Texas again next week so will see
what it has to offer there.

Does anyone else use Open Table?

Yes, I've used it. Wish I could remember where I read the article by a
restaurateur who was against it. He felt it cost more than it delivered.

Read the info on the OT site, Goofball. :-) Use Open Table x number
of times and you get x dollars in restaurant credit.

It's not very obvious, I think. I was looking for it at the top of the
page.

Yes, I use Open Table. I used it this past week, for a restaurant in
San Francisco.

A word up to the northern Cal folks who might be interested in the
French Laundry. They sometimes have seats through Open Table. I was
persuing for places for Wednesday this past week, and was looking at
Wine Country restaurants. The French Laundry popped up on their
list, and they had a table for 4!! At a decent time, no less!

I would have jumped on that, if I had the money, but as I was watching
my pennies, I couldn't. But for anyone that is interested, keep tabs
on them on Open Table. ;)

I use it but mostly to check availability. Then I call the restaurant
and make a reservation. Everytime I make a reservation through Open
Table, I get a crappy table.

I have not had any problem with Open Table reservations leading to lesser
quality tables.

However, many restaurants put only a fraction of their possible
reservations on Open Table so it is not so good for checking availability.

She can always speak up to say she wants another table. It wouldn't

I find that when traveling on my own, or with another woman or two, we
sometimes get pulled to a not so nice table. I've learned to speak up
and ask for something better when that happens now.

Yes, I do that too. If they have one, you get it - but if they don't,
you get stuck with the bad table. I'd rather just get an acceptable
table to start with, so I call instead of making the reservation with
OT. If it only happens to me, so be it. But, for me, it's 100%.

And, I know that OT doesn't book a full restaurant, some tables are
always reserved by the restaurant outside the system. However, if you
look at OT availability and it's not there, it's a pretty good
indication that they will be having a busy night. Often I prefer to
be at a restaurant when it's not packed to the gills.

I find Open Table and Urbanspoon to be very reliable until the
pedestrians of Facebook start slamming the system. At that point,
it appears nothing is reliable or valuable.

Over the years, I have learned to tip the Maitre d' on the way out of
a restaurant.....they will NEVER forget you with the next visit.

I noticed that too, so it's always worth calling if they say there's

I just checked it. Bad search engine. Apparently some spot in
Charlotteville pays to be listed as 25 miles from my zip code as well as a
bunch of DC/Williamsberg places and a Richmond spot. I'm in the Norfolk
area. None are 25 miles from me, one is about 400!!!

Sorry, useless here if they do that.
