I've looked again and I think in between the words 'Hello, Mike' and 'How's that deep fryer Del sold you?' I think you get a very quick glimpse of Albert's beard (a real 'blink and you miss it' moment). Also, the colour and stitching pattern of the coat seems identical in both shots.

Also, if you look at Mike in both shots, everything about him is identical. If they were from separate shoots (two months apart by all accounts), there might be a small difference in his hair or clothing, but I ripped a freeze of both shots and put them side by side, and I really think it's the same footage.

Great post mate, and yes, who knows, maybe you are right.

I tell you, that must have been a really difficult time for the cast and crew, to carry on filming without Lennard.

to carry on smiling and laughing in scenes when they knew Lennard had just died - that must have been a really difficult thing for Jason and Lyndhurst to get their heads around.

and hats off to John Sullivan, who did a fantastic job of handling series 4 under the sad circumstances.

Why that line has been dubbed puzzles me, it's not offensive?:confused:
 
No, 'Hole in One' was the first planned episode of series 4, and just one day of location filming had been completed (the scene outside the court after the hearing, plus the scene outside the Nag's Head at the beginning of the episode) before Lennard was taken ill. When Lennard died and Buster came in, John re-wrote the episode for Uncle Albert, as well as two brand new episodes, 'Happy Returns' (as they didn't want to start the series with the funeral episode, so 'Grandad' was said to be in hospital, though Lennard had sadly died), and 'Strained Relations' (where Grandad was buried and we met Albert).

Some footage from Lennard's appearance in 'Hole in One' actually remains in the episode. It is in the scene outside the Nags Head, where Albert asks Mike "How's that deep-fat fryer Del sold you?". This had been shot once with Lennard, then re-shot a month later with Buster. However, the shot of Kenneth MacDonald replying as Mike was taken from the original footage, and it is the edge of Grandad's coat we see in the corner of shot, not Albert's.

I do, I think licensed to drill was good, it was the last ever time we saw Grandad, as the episode was made in 1984 (especially made for schools, with no laughter track).

was replaced and dubbed with:

'there's that italian kid, good player, what was his name?'

basically the word 'prat' was exchanged for 'kid'.
 
Yes, I have 'Licenced to Drill', 'Christmas Trees', 'White Mice', the Royal Variety show appearance, the Gulf War mini-episode, the Comic Relief mini-episode, and the various TV commercials featuring one or more of the characters. I think that's about it...
 
A fascinating insight, DD. I've only seen Lennard Pearce [other than in OFAH] in an early episode of Minder, I think it was.
Only two episodes of the series as it was planned to finish in '96,had neither Granddad or Albert, including the Happy Returns ep, [and series 1 ep. about the two Indians].
 
I found a Lennard Pearce tribute site which has a still from one of the scenes he filmed in A Hole In One. I don't know where rumours start about scenes being lost or destroyed start but if your in the position to know about such things you should have a straight answer. The BBC will know what they have and don't have, you don't really think they have huge vaults all cluttered up do you? They will have all their Only Fools stuff separate and kept in good condition. If they do rerelease the series on bluray and they don't include any deleted material then there is no point buying it. I don't know if they are planning any kind of new release but this next one for most people will be the final one. They've milked this cash cow for long enough and people want something new. The ball is in their court now.
 
Thank you! Yes, I remember reading that, due to ill health, Lennard missed filming for the episode you mentioned, and his lines were re-written for either Del or Rodney.

Did you know that Grandad and Uncle Albert actually worked together?? I think it was an episode of a PD James (Commander Dalgleish) Mystery? Buster Merryfield played a coroner (I think!) and, sitting in the back of a Rolls, was driven through some gates manned by an old security guard, played by Lennard Pearce!! So just for a brief moment, the two elder of the Good Ship Trotters passed fleetingly in the night!!

honestly, anyone who's reading this - and you still dont have 'licensed to drill' - get it, it's a must for any only fools fan.

'licensed to drill' is an ultra- rare episode, that has never been broadcast on TV and probably never will be.

seriously, if your an only fools fan, get it.
 
I noticed a small cut to the episode 'Dates' that was on Gold the other day.

When Rodney & Nerys are cut up in the van by the red convertible, Rodney leans out of the window gives them the finger & says something like "swivel on that camel breath".

That was cut out & it just cut straight to Nerys in the van "weren't you scared Rodney?"
 
Yes, filming must have been difficult, especially having attended Leonard's funeral and then, a month later, going back into a graveyard (albeit a different one) to film Grandad's funeral. That must have been hard on the team. Also, it must have been awkward re-filming materal with Buster that had already been done with Leonard, or re-writing Grandad's dialogue for Albert. I guess, as series 4 had already been written (except for the two 'new' episodes at the beginning), it wasn't until series 5 that material was written especially for Albert.

Also, it must have difficult when they filmed Albert's funeral as well, having attended Buster's in real life. I know the team really wanted to give Grandad a funeral in the show, rather than saying he'd just gone off somewhere, but I think for Albert they should have kept up the story about him retiring to the coast with Elsie Patridge. I don't think they really needed to do a funeral with Albert as well.
