in the episode modern men, where Cassandra had the miscarrage.

after she had her miscarrage scene (crying with Rodney) there was originally going to be a scene where Del and uncle Albert had a heart to heart chat.

Albert: 'I know what he's going through son'

Del: 'I dont think you do unc'

Albert: 'I do, my Ada had a miscarrage aswell'.

- I'm not sure if this scene was ever recorded, or cut at the rehersal stage.
 
Are we confusing scenes that were filmed but cut for time before broadcast or scenes that were scripted but never filmed with scenes included on intial broadcast and subsequently cut from repeats or commercial releases?
 
I have these magazine DVDs, I got them when they were first coming out. I think it was autumn 2005.

Once I had a homemade DVD of a very grainy 'Christmas Trees' and 'Comic Relief Special'. These were the two short episodes that were never released on video or DVD.
 
Timing reasons? Maybe the original tape was damaged? Other shows have had to have sections of the programme removed due to the original transmission tape being damaged at some point. Mind Your Language springs to mind.

Although it's probably more likely simply to be for timing.
 
I believe the Director General of the BBC at the time was reported to think this episode was below standard, and also, that both DJ and NL were down with the flu during part of the filming. It was certiaily a patchy affair all round. But Royal Flush wasn't the only episode that showed Del in a poor light. The series 5 ep. 'Tea for three' the same year 1986 was little better in that respect, but with the Hang gliding, was funny at least, which RF was at times only.

There's a good reason for this, gerry D. It is the fact that the trotters are cut off from all their neighbours and the gang at the nag's head. This episode is the only one since the first series where Del and Rodney are on their own to carry the episode. It's also one of the least funny for the same reason.

Production

This episode was originally written for Grandad and meant to be the fourth season opening episode, but unfortunately, Lennard Pearce died from a heart attack after the filming of Grandad falling down the Nag's Head cellar and the courthouse scene. The episode was put on hold after Christmas 1984, and "Happy Returns" and "Strained Relations" were written and filmed as the first two episodes for the season. Once Buster Merryfield joined the cast, the scenes with Grandad were re-shot with Albert (the only shots of the Grandad version kept in the Uncle Albert version were Mike looking up at Grandad) The rest of the original footage has never been transmitted.

From that info it can't possibly be Albert that you can see.
 
Mmm....this is a strange one. I was the one, if you read back a few posts, who made the original statement that the shot of Mike looking up from the beer cellar was taking from the original footage (filmed with Lennard Pearce) and started this thread-within-a-thread. I took this information from Ken McDonald (Mike) himself, who said this was the case in 'The Story of Only Fools and Horses' book.

But, due to the poster above who said he was convinced the shot in the episode was filmed with Albert and not Grandad, I looked again. Despite what wiki says, I think it is indeed Albert. I have freeze-framed the shot and you can clearly see Albert's coat and beard, and not the edge of Grandad's coat. They are of slightly different colour. If you freeze-frame it at the point where Mike says 'I want...' (as in 'I want a word with you, Trotter!'), the white beard is visible in the very top corner of shot.

I don't know if we'll ever know for definite (and I guess it doesn't really matter all that much), but I think the freeze-frame here is as good a proof as it's possible to get that the scene was indeed re-filmed with Albert, and that is is not the original Grandad footage that was used, despite there being claims to the contrary.
 
To be fair, in the episode 'a royal flush'.

I realise Del isn't his usual self, and seems to be in a bit of a bad mood - but I think he is supposed to be in a bad mood - frustrated at not being able to sell his suitcases of cutlery, and Rodney doing a bunk (not looking out for a policeman) - I think this is what put Del in a bad mood (for the episode).
 
It is a bit sickening that so many tv shows , not just OFAH have suffered edits because of something as inconsequential as a radio playing a barely audible song in the background of a scene.

Where the problem has occurred in films and US tv shows the music track is usually separate from the regular soundtrack so its easy for the offending music to be removed or replaced and this happened in films as diverse as Jaws, Airplane , The Thing etc and in series like Quantum Leap.

UK shows where the problem sequence has been filmed rather than shot on tape should also be able to make adjustments without too much interference , but shows where the majority is shot on tape like OFAH , Grange Hill etc either have the music playing in the studio or its mixed in to the regular soundtrack so that its impossible to delete the music on its own once the recording is done.

It is for this reason we have the problem.
I believe there have been various attempts over the years to find ways to get round this but nobody has had much success , or at least not with good enough results to make it viable for commercial use - not yet anyway
 
Actually if I remember right on the VHS or DVD release (I have both) Albert comes back from the shops and says something like "P*ki wont let us have any breakfast" I remember the line well
 
In the original transmission of A Royal Flush did Del actually tell the joke about the Irishman on the ski holiday during the dinner scene? In the DVD he starts to tell it and is then cut off by the Lord, but I'm pretty sure in the original version you actually heard the joke in its entirity?

Del behaves absolutely dreadfully in this episode. Poor Rodders. :(
 
Am I right in saying that, for once, GOLD contains scenes missing from officially-released DVD's, such as The Beatles Money from Mother Nature's Son and Manfred Mann's Mighty Quinn from The Class Of '62?
