Yes, the warranty is thru RIM, but last time I looked, most of us bought our phones from a carrier...This is straight from the Blackberry site concerning warranty and out-of-warranty claims:
when i take my car in for warranty work, i take it to an independent dealer that services that brand...i don't take it to Infiniti Corporate offices or anything.
it's a little different with RIM since RIM itself does sell devices, but i'm sure most of the phones out there were purchased through carriers and not directly through RIM.
when i called T-mo about my pearl because of the crooked camera, they told me that since i was in the 14-day remorse period, I should go back to the dealer to get a new replacement. But after the 14-day period, i would be able to get a replacement thru T-moble, but most likely it would be a refurb.
Speaking of which, i'm on the phone with T-mo right now...they said even for warranty claims, if you go straight to RIM when you bought your device from the dealer, RIM will charge you for shipping/handling and service charges, but not for the repairs itself since it's under warranty...so to avoid these charges, the warranty should be handled through the dealer/carrier.
