Hey i have question, i bought the pearl and says it has one yr manufacturre warranty. So if something goes wrong within one year? i can return it to tmobile and get a new phone? maybe a tmo rep can answer this.

i think if you return it to T-mo under warranty, they will most likely replace it with a refurbed model.

Not that that's a bad thing...refurbed models probably are less likely to have defects than new-off-the-production-line, considering they already had a defect and was repaired/refurbed and tested.

And there's a difference between warrnty and insurance. It's funny how many times i see posted on automotive forums about someone mis-shifting and blowing their engine, or hitting a pothole and bending a rim, and think the warranty should cover it.

Warranties are for manufacturing defects, such as if they installed the camera lens crooked (such as was my case).

Insurance is for accidents, such as when you drop the phone in the toilet.

Warranties are honored by the manufacturer of the phone. TMobile didnt make the phone, RIM did. So it is RIM that will replace the phone under the 1 year warranty.

Yes, the warranty is thru RIM, but last time I looked, most of us bought our phones from a carrier...This is straight from the Blackberry site concerning warranty and out-of-warranty claims:

when i take my car in for warranty work, i take it to an independent dealer that services that brand...i don't take it to Infiniti Corporate offices or anything.

it's a little different with RIM since RIM itself does sell devices, but i'm sure most of the phones out there were purchased through carriers and not directly through RIM.

when i called T-mo about my pearl because of the crooked camera, they told me that since i was in the 14-day remorse period, I should go back to the dealer to get a new replacement. But after the 14-day period, i would be able to get a replacement thru T-moble, but most likely it would be a refurb.

Speaking of which, i'm on the phone with T-mo right now...they said even for warranty claims, if you go straight to RIM when you bought your device from the dealer, RIM will charge you for shipping/handling and service charges, but not for the repairs itself since it's under warranty...so to avoid these charges, the warranty should be handled through the dealer/carrier.

Being in a service center for Sprint-Nextel, if you come in with insurance or repair we will take care of it for you, if you are under warranty and have no coverage you must call RIM. I do see your point mrdeeno.

someone with Cingular using an unlocked T-mo branded pearl can't just walk into a T-mo store and demand warranty service of course.

though i could be wrong, I think most people out there aren't using unlocked phones on carriers that don't support their devices...so in most cases, most of us should go to our dealer/carrier for work.

And Tmobile will not replace the device..to the best of my knowledge, you must send it back to RIM, and pay shipping to RIM. THen they will send you another device. If you pay the $5.99 month you can just take it back to tmobile and they will swap it for another....with exception of neglect or drowing it in water.

you can only get equpment protection within the first 14 days.

it covers malfunction, damage, theft, etc...so it will be covered even if you neglect it and drown it, or run over it with your car.

Not necessarily true. I had a 7100t with T-Mobile that crapped out on me. I called T-Mobile and they sent me a new one with a pre-paid box to send the defective one back to them. So while T-Mobile is not necessarily the provider of the warranty they do facilitate the exchange for the OEM manufacturer.

They told me that personal Damage was not covered. But i could just be wrong.

I always get the warranty on my wifes phones cause shes so hard on them. Im not bad at all with mine. Ill check into that thou, cause i do want to add that on to mine.

just cause i paid out right for mine not through a plan

Better act fast...according to T-mo, you only have 14 days to add the protection. It's technically not a warranty...it's an insurance.

According to T-mo: "Asurion Insurance Services, Inc.* is the agent and provides claims servicing under this program. Liberty Mutual Insurance Company is the underwriter of this product."

Further, there is a deductible that you have to pay first when making a claim and they fall under different "schedules" depending on the device. For the pearl, it is a $110 deductible.

The stuff not covered include: wear/tear, cosmetic damage, obsolescence, warranty repairs (covered under the manufacturer's warranty), intentional loss/damage, seizure or destruction by a gov't authority, nuclear hazard, and war.

So yeah, unless they can prove you intentionally gave your pearl a bath, it's covered for water damage.
