I just checked in Barnes & Noble, and OP volumes 24 - 28 are here! I snatched em all up, at the unfortunately inflated price of $9.99 USD.

Comments soon.

A few notes, this release uses 'Kami' in place of God when speaking of Eneru.

Not to mention any other whacky Toei/Shueisha-isms.

I really do highly dislike Viz's release of the series...

Nice, I'll be sure to buy these volumes in bulk now. But man $9.99, oh well I'm used to it thanks to non SJ title I buy on a regular basis.

Which makes it all the more stupid on their part. If only I was magically somehow the editor for One Piece...

Well, at least not buying the GNs gives me more money to spend on the DVRAB...

I don't mind using "Kami." It's being used as a title, which is what "God of Skypeia" is. As long as they make it clear the Eneru has taken it too far and believes himself to be a real deity, it's fine by me.

There's nothing distinctly Japanese about Skypian culture, so throwing the random 'Kami-sama' out there is a pretty big red flag that Viz is just trying to cover their asses rather than be any sort of faithful to any intention on Oda's part. The ruler of Skypeia is ' [a] God', while Eneru believes himself to actually be God more in the Western sense.

I don't think it's consistent to not translate Kami while translating a title like "Soul Reaper" from "shinigami" in Bleach or vice versa, so I both disagree with Jacob and fault Viz (context: in another thread I supported the Bleach translation while Jacob preferred it left alone). Though quite frankly, I don't care very much. The issue is a small fish in a vast ocean.

Nice to see manga collectors getting their due, although I can only afford one or the other and I prefer to go for the anime in this case.

Either Toei or Shueisha, who should have the actual master license, dictate these things, but Mato has proven it possible for suggestions and pleas to be made for getting these things a bit more in line.

Thinking more about the Soul Reaper deal, what makes even less sense is that Soul Reaper is one 'translated' term amongst no other. All of the other Shinigami-based terms and pronouns aren't translated (save for cultural notes).

It is Viz, the same company that turned 'Greed on a stone cross' into 'Greed on a random chunk of rock. Maybe they have something against perceived blasphemy? Either way, I agree 'Kami' comes off as something I'd expect to see in a fan translation. At least it's not as bad as Tokyopop using 'Hai!' and 'Baka' in X Astray.

That's even nothing compared to wholesale japanese phrases (which are never even translated at all) being kept in the Evangelion Raising Shinji Ikari project by Dark Horse.

Well, yeah, I figured that'd be the case. I just don't know if Borders has them yet.

I shall have an update on this after I go there tomorrow.

Sadly, my B&N didn't have the new volumes in yet, not that I would've had the money to buy them. I hardly have the cash to buy the DVRAB, or any other manga.

Well, my Borders doesn't have them yet either, so I'll probably have to wait until Tuesday before they show up.

At the least, the fact that I cleaned out their supply of the Baroque Works volumes should be a hint for them to stock the speed-up.

Because today (January 5th) is the official release date of the first speed-up volumes, I guess I'll start things off:
