Hello!

I'm selling a 5800 on eBay. I checked out other sales - everyone seemed to post System Info pages, so I did as well.

However my page also shows the smart card ID.

I'm now worried that publishing the smart card ID like that could lead to the card getting pirated.

Should I remove the image or blank out the smart card ID?

Thanks.

I can't see any reason to include the ID in the sale. As for it being used for hacking; that is possible. I don't know exactly how the hackers operate; but I've heard the word cloning used.

I'd change the image and blank it out to be safe. Maybe include the first 4 characters only?

You cannot hack with only a smart card ID. And the number is useful if the potential buyer wants to call bell to ask them if there is a balance on your account, because if there was he'd have to pay it before he could activate your receiver. The only reason pirates blank their SID is so that BEV can't either trace it to them if it was ever activated, or ends up being blacklisted somehow (which I don't think they ever did).

Actually selling receivers on Ebay with the smart card is not permitted under Ebay rules......falls under a section of the FCC regulations that for some reason also apply to Canadian sellers. Tryed to sell an old 4700 receiver last year with the smart card.......someone complained and the last instant before the auction closed it was removed by Ebay and a nasty notice sent to me threatening to suspend my Ebay account. Since it is almost impossible to check every item by the Ebay police a number of sales do go through but watch when someone asks you to identify the ROM numbers.....in many cases it is Ebay security.

On a side note, I wouldn't buy a used receiver without knowing the smartcard ID
If the card doesn't match with the receiver, then you won't be able to activate it on your Bell account

There have been 10000's of receiver's sold on ebay with the smart card included. It is is allowed, you probley just had a old rom 10 included in your auction. Old narga 1 smart card are not allowed to be sold on ebay, nagra 2 cards can!

I have bought and sold receivers on ebay with the smartcard included...no problems.

Showing or speaking about the card is against E-Bay's policies. If someone complains they will cancel your ad.

remember that Ball can complain that you are selling THEIR property as the IRD is yours, BUT the smartcard remains the property of ExpressVu.

Not true. As I posted above the Smartcard belongs to ExpressVu and they requested that E-bay cancel any pictures or card lists.

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/electronics.html

"Satellite and Cable TV descramblers: eBay does not permit the sale of items that can solely be used to descramble or facilitate the access to cable or satellite television programming without authorization by or payment to satellite or cable operators. Stating the item is for educational or test purposes will not legitimize a product that is otherwise inappropriate. Information on "how to" descramble or gain access to cable or satellite television programming without authorization or payment is similarly not allowed. eBay policy also prohibits the "encouragement" of this type of activity. Some examples of items which are not allowed, include:

Smart Card Programmers and Unloopers

Programmed Smart Cards

Blocker Devices

Hardware or Software DSS Emulators "

That's right because it's not a issue, as long as it's the current nagra 2 smartcard (blue with yellow arrow) or the nagra 3 replacement being sent out now, you won't have a problem.

For example this listing is OK as it includeds the current smartcard.hxxp://cgi.ebay.ca/Bell-ExpressVu-5800-PVR_W0QQitemZ320225498731QQihZ011QQcategoryZ32847QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

This listing hxxp://cgi.ebay.ca/Bell-ExpressVu-5800-PVR-receiver-remote-manuals_W0QQitemZ270217483836QQihZ017QQcategoryZ32847QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Includes the old Rom 10 smartcard and might possibly be removed by ebay. (if this one is yours it might be removed)

It is ok to sell Dish Network receivers with the access card on ebay, but you can't do the same with BEV. If ebay sees it, they pull the listing

The reason they do this is to stop the smart card market. A lot of the time, the seller would sell a smart card with a broken receiver, and would charge a 100$ surcharge if the buyer actually wanted the receiver.

This is Dish and Bev claiming copyright on the card's content (the actual physical card is yours, you bought it, they wouldn't have much claim to it). It has nothing to do with the FCC. Just writing on the card, oh by the way you just bought this, but it's really ours, would fly in court. It would be as if a car manufacturer wrote this car is the manufacturer's property under the hood. This is what permits them to loop smartcards without being accused of destruction of property. The physical card is still perfectly usable, it's just the software on the card (which they own) that is programmed in an infinite loop.

Barter, you are absolutely wrong on the Smart Card ownership.

Send an e-mail to ExpressVu about the same card. They will tell you that the smartcard belongs to them. Bell is very clear about this in their agreements. Alternatively READ the current customer agreement:

http://www.bell.ca/web/tv/en/all_regions/pdfs/sub_agreement.pdf

"(d) Smart Cards
Smart Cards are non-transferable. Your Smart Card will work only in the IRD with which it was packaged. Notwithstanding that the Smart Card was packaged with your IRD, whether you purchased it or rented it from ExpressVu, all Smart Cards remain our property and any tampering or other unauthorized modification to a Smart Card may result in, and subject you to, legal action, or any other action as set out in this Agreement. If you attempt to use that Smart Card with any other IRD without our authorization, we may terminate your right to receive and view the Programming. We may require that you return the Smart Card to us if it is defective or damaged, prior to providing a replacement Smart Card to you. In addition, we may require that you return the Smart Card to us if you terminate your Account, and failure to do so will result in a recovery charge being assessed against you. In the case where you have rented your DTH Equipment from ExpressVu, the terms and conditions relating to the return of such DTH Equipment can be found in your rental agreement."

Yes, Bell will normally allow the transfer of ownership, but they are pretty lax on the issue, you still are supposed to call Bell (as the "lister" current owner) call them with the name of the new owner.

Old Narga 1 cards yes because there is no valid use for them. I have asked Expressvu CSR's before if there was any problem selling your receiver on ebay, they told me there was not and to INCLUDE the smartcard and to call them after the sale and give the buyers name so they can activate the receiver.

They are talking about devices used to illegally receive satillite signals not legit current smartcards!! No where here does it say you cannot sell Legit smartcards.

Everyone knows what is written on back of the smart card and in the CSA,
it's irrelavant, it's not a issue!!! No where did I say the owner of the receiver also owns the smartcard, so I don';t know what in the hell you are talking about.

Rom 10 cards are not allowed to be listed on ebay peroid, there is no valid use for them there are no such previsions in ebay against rom 102/103, S01/S02's etc.

Like I said in my post #12.

Your spliting hairs over a bunch of foolishnbess that does not matter. The point of the matter is that if you are the legal owner of a receiver you can sell it on ebay with it's current valid smart card!!

Crap, why can't it be simple? I bought the damn thing, paid $600 for it, paid legitimate subscription fees to Bell (I know a lot of people who didn't!), now I want to sell it!

I always research before an auction and everyone else seems to be selling their smart card too - including other BEV equipment.

Anyway, I'm keeping the sale up. If eBay pulls it (and that would be my luck) so be it.

The Agreement is how EVu has been able to get E-Bay to cancel any auction showing cards (when it is identified to E-Bay or their regular watchers find it.

You argument is absolutely silly. The same logic would be "...well I leased the XXX, and I sold it. They never specifically verbally told me I couldn't, so I did."

The OP asked if it was ok to post it. It is not ok if it shows the card. That is from E-Bay at the request of EVu.

I too posted one of my 3100s with the ROM 103 card and got the cancellation note from E-Bay as I stated that it included the original matching card that was subbed until whatever date and that there was zero balance on the unit/card. I got rid of it because I bought a 6100 for the $119 deal in Dec. When I finally sold it, I contacted EVu with the purchaser's name and address and phone number.

You seem to think that legal agreements mean nothing. You also seem to have inside knowledge from E-Bay, can you provide your source? You are giving someone advise in an area where you are portraying yourself as an expert with expert knowledge.

EOD for me.

It doesn't matter what they claim. If you bought your receiver, you own the card. It was in the box, you paid money for it, now you own it. Have you ever heard of this being tested in court? Of course you haven't because if they did it would result in that part of the agreement to be voided. Their only claim is with the software on the card, not the actual, physical card.

Even if you de facto agree with the agreement by subscribing, you can't sign away your rights, and property is a right.

If I sell you something, but wrote on some non evident, critical part that I still own it, would you gladly hand it back to me if I asked you? Of course you wouldn't. Same applies here.
