It's easy to separate the Nokia fanboys from the rest. No matter how you put it, they will argue and defend to the grave even though it's clear that Nokia "might of" made the wrong decision to put old tech and sell it as new tech while other manufacturers are leading the way.

Blaxx, thanks. So, folks, be careful - the videos of the black N97 in Eldar's preview are a couple of monts old - don't put too much weight on them in terms of the OS/UI speed etc.
 
Nokia needs to release this thing next week - or get left in the dust.
Timing is everything, especially with the Omnia Hd already released, Palm Pre coming out in a few days, new iphone on its way, as well as other phones we have been holding the gun on in anticipation for this device. As long as the hardware is solid (really my main concern), the n97 should be good to go - and software can always be updated.

I know I am being impatient but I really want to get my hands on this "TRUE" n95 successor.
 
Of course not. We can't even fully use wireless G yet. But when I moved to wireless G I made a point of getting rid of the wireless B devices because they slow down the whole network.

For me though I will probably need to run dual band. 5GHz for N and 2.4GHz for G. I still have that Squeezebox around that uses G.

So I personally don't care about wireless-N on a phone.

The other stuff is up to date for 2009 in a meaningful way though.
 
I am excited that people started to get their units. I dont know about Ron Jeremy, but I myself feel like Peter North...ready to pull the trigger :lolup:
 
Whoever picks this up from the Nokia store tomorrow, please take a video with theme effects on and show us the screen rotation and go through the menus and apps. I want to see how well the phone renders them.
 
I think this is exactly part of the N97 discussion in regards to the future software updates that are being reported to be coming. In the past handsets never saw a version update of the Symbian software that came on the phone and it's being reported that the N97 may, in fact, bring this type of update. I think the only way that will happen is if it's a Symbian Foundation release and not another variant of S60v5 with a FP.

And the discussion isn't whether the N97 will receive bug fixes but full feature updates. There will, indeed, be a number of firmware updates to address bugs and functionality. We'll have to wait and see what major updates hit the phone in Q3.

Nokia has definitely improved their support no matter how much people want to complain about it. The E70 I had only got one update to v2.x firmware from 1.x and it was necessary for that phone to even function properly. My N95-4 saw a number of updates and the E71 has also at in a very timely manner. All the eggs that Nokia are putting into the N97 basket I expect them to offer support that we've never seen on any other handset. They HAVE to.
 
As a poster said a while back in this thread, the touch element of the N97 is the least essential/noteworthy aspect of the device, at least for me. Everyone's talking as if it will live or die on whether the touch implementation can match up to the iPhone or the Pre, but it's the other features that make it a winner. Namely:

- large tilted screen with QWERTY
- 32GB of memory expandable up to 48 and later 64GB when larger sized MicroSD cards become available
- 5 MP camera with VGA video recording
- FM transmitter (not many phones have this now)
- TV-Out (yay, coming from the E90, this will be a big bonus)
- wi-fi, A2DP, GPS

None of these are unique (except for the large flash memory) but there are no phones as far as I know which combine ALL these features. I'm not blind to the fact that I won't be getting a silky smooth touch experience like the iPhone or the Pre, but as long as it's not super annoying, I'll be quite happy.
 
i keep lobbying which one to get for my next phone the samsung omina or the nokia n97.... its so hard for me one day i keep saying the omina the next the nokia phone. its just that the samsung seems so revolunary with the HD and everything.
 
thats an old video, it was posted over at symbian-freak in a thread a while back, not sure if the n97 in that vid is final, but from what iv seen in the latest vids it dnt seem slow.
