*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

I got my N97 2 days ago, and it's on BST. I cant imagine how stupid Nokia is for putting that horrible email client on it that they call Nokia Messaging. For Gmail/Hotmail it's perfect, for exchange use it's absolute trash. I know you use exchange as well, so until Roadsync releases a proper version from their website (no way am I getting it from that sorry excuse called Ovi store) I'm staying away from S60 altogether. I loved using the phone (because I loved S60) but once I got to emailing I was about to chuck the phone on my wall, but I realized I'd loose a great deal of cash.

I mean for FKs sake! - iPhone/WM/Pre/BB are all YEARS ahead in the emailing dept, what's Nokia thinking?

I was trashing N97 before I got it which I thought was unfair, so I decided to use it myself and give my opinion, and goodness it's horrible. All I wanted was to get the same email client on the E75 I'd still be happy. But no, Nokia insists on separating E/N-series.

I'm going back to my Bold for now. Even the E72 would've sufficed but they decided on a 2.36" screen.
 
Well, as of last week, my next phone was likely to be the Tube. I think it is safe to say that my next phone will be the N97 (unless an unlocked Android phone comes out before it is released). My question to the forum is, how does the N97 compare to the Tube overall?
 
of course you can on the 5800. and you can on the n97. you ARE talking about writing text with t9 in portrait mode, correct? if so, then its an absolute YES on both 5800 and n97. how else would you use the phone? nokia doesnt expect everyone to open up the qwerty keyboard EVERY time you want to text, write, or do something on the phone.
 
This is exactly right. I'm surprised to see so many people upset about the spacebar. It's in the best place it could possibly for this kind of device. You'll be used to it within the first hour I'd wager.

I'm also surprised so many people are knocking the placement of the joypad. Who here hasn't owned a Nintendo before? For cell phones, I use whatever hand is free, so left or right thumb doesn't matter much to me. But since I am right handed, I would rather have it on the left side of a touch screen device so I can scroll with my left hand and point with my right. Nokia did a fantastic job on the keyboard layout.
 
I think the keyboard will be great given some time. I, too, always use my right thumb for the space on all my QWERTY devices including touch typing on the computer keyboard. If anything, once you get used to where the space bar is, you'll type faster since your thumb won't have to travel as far to get to the space. Don't knock it until you try it. Most here is so quick to ***** about something before they even get a chance to try it out.

This looks to be a great device. As mentioned before, the applet home screen looks like it was lifted from the tablets; customizable, movable, all good things.

Single slide for keyboard exposure will likely have solid feel with little to no wobble and the angle for the screen for viewing is great. 3.5", high rez display and so far the software looks polished and quick. Add in the 32GB of storage, uSDHC and all the usual N-series goodness and it should be a hit. The 5MP camera is sufficient for P&S, hopefully there's noise reduction from the older 5MP cams, but not totally necessary.

Though performance looks good so far, the proc/RAM config is still unknown. While the device looks responsive I hope it stays that way with 10GB of music in the library and a ton of converted movies, large email inboxes, etc.

Though there's no mention of a NAM version hopefully there isn't much of a delay between the Euro release and NAM. Nokia has certainly shortened this delay with the E-series releases and some of their recent phones. Hope to see this continue. Just sucks to see a 6 month delay on this. Now it's possible that it will come sooner, like March. Nokia may have said H1 '09 to save face from promising Q1 '09 and having it slip a few weeks the wrong way. One can hope anyway.
 
Damn 64GB of memory? I guess they want us to have the phone for a long time... This a a big delima as he stated release first half of 2009 and the tube being released first qr 2009. Looks like I'm skipping the tube. That d-pad is gonna take some gettin used to as I'm a righty though.
 
what you gotta do is just take a step back from everything, just look at the phone and think "n95 + a bunch more". sure its not cutting edge as it could be. but the end of the day, with the n97 you have an awesome little mini-looking-laptop type device. with a solid hinge mechanism.

just step back from it all and think how great of an all around phone it is. that's my thoughts anyway. sure its not super top of the line. but in its own right, its a great device and good purchase.
