*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

I always explain my reasons. Do you have any reasons? If you can't explain your reasoning then I wonder if even you know why. If you don't know why you must stick with a certain platform then does that not make you a fanboy of that platform?

Or you could be in love. How many times were you asked by someone why you love them and you didn't have an answer? I doubt very much anyone wants to make sex to their phone so that likely isn't the answer.

All that aside, you must have your reasons. Even if they are "weak" like you work for Symbian or you get a cut off of every Symbian sale, or you own Nokia stock. If you act without reason then you act on faith.

Granted you could very easily say that your experience with S60 has been great and you'd rather not look elsewhere this time and if you snag the device at $450 that wouldn't be an unreasonable thing even in my book. However I will warn you that S60v3 and S60v5 are not the same. It is not the same experience. There have been some S60v3 users who embraced S60v5, but if you look around most have not. The biggest argument I hear in general for the 5800XM is its price. A price so low that it makes "dealing" with S60v5 bearable, however I would be wary of spending a dime more on a device using that OS unless the straight hardware benefits alone are worth the money. In that case the hardware will make the platform bearable.

But you have chosen to try S60v5 on an expensive device, one that is better than the N95 for its screen and worse for it's platform (S60v5) and lack of 3D acceleration. S60v5 is a negative mark for any device even the Omnia, but with its capacitive screen and modern hardware it makes a good argument for itself. The N97's argument is a slide out keyboard at best. Those widgets are immature and will be featured on a far cheaper device with same or better specs this fall and closer towards getting out of beta status. Of course it won't have that keyboard. They need some form of carrot to coax the extra $$$ out. I'm sure some people are justifying this thing hoping that this is communicator material. Nokia even alludes to this. I'm saying don't be fooled. The communicator on its worst day was and still is a far superior device to this. It ran S60v3.

Anyway, I too just want this device to come out so I can hear the impressions and hear what exactly people are doing with those widgets.

techradar hands-on (has this been posted? if so, sorry!)

"Thankfully, we're able to report that things have been improved considerably since then, with many of the slow and buggy problems having been sorted out."

they like the qwerty, still picky about the touchscreen.

dissing on the CPU:

"There have been some criticisms levelled at the processor, which is a single ARM 11 CPU, clocking around 434Mhz, and it seemed that certain elements of the phone struggled with such an underpowered effort."

Yeah one really has to try it. May get easier with longer use, but I prefer the white one and will wait to see if later production models improve on the keyboard.

Yea, the panels is a cool UI overlay over the WM anyway. My friend has the X1a as well, and he loves it, plus the size of the phone is just right.

I would've considered the phone, but I'm done WM for now

You're doing it again...

Of course I know why I'm sticking with Symbian and why I'm choosing S60v5. I know the + and -'s. That really has nothing to do with my point though, and it would be a waste of my time writing and your time reading it.

The pinching was awful but I don't think the Send/End keys will be that much of a problem. When I had my N95, my thumb would be at the bottom of the phone supporting the bottom while I hit the shutter with my index finger.

true, but it's herder to scratch a matte surface...

my 6290 handled life better on the bottom when you compare it to the top...

a design like the HTC Android DEV G1 would be nice...

Exactly why I canceled my pre-orders but somehow I have one out on the truck! Im hoping with my expectations down I might be pleasantly surprised and actually like the phone.

You're one of us, you know. We'd never buy an expensive phone without watching some reviews first. Would you mind posting an "unboxing" video so we can look at the material?

Maybe because he's used both and prefers the eternity's touch screen?

I haven't used an eternity but the 5800's resistive touch screen is just like any other and is weird in terms of sensitivity. Sometimes I had to press the screen hard and other times light taps worked.
