*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

So...ah...
I have not posted on HF for a long time. Because I bought an 5800. Then I traded it for an iPhone. Now I want the 5800 back...but I'm thinking about getting the n97 or whatever update to the 5800 comes out.

Thing is, the iPhone sucks, except for the hardware, which rocks. Lack of multitasking is bugging me now. The contacts, email, and everything is REAL slow. I don't know why people say its a fast phone... even dialing a number is slow. The 5800 was much faster, and had a great remote control for switching music tracks. And I can use a BT keyboard. Yes, the texting interface is not as good. And my #1 gripe with the 5800 was that dirt collected between the screen and the ridges on the side of the phone...that's it. That's why I sold it...it just seemed sort of disgusting. Oh, and iphone text entry is better.

I don't see why so many complaints about this N97. If it can be kept cleaner than the iphone, I will get it. I want to hook up a BT keyboard. I want to listen to music and put new music on the phone when at my friends house. I want to take pictures with my phone again. I want to make phone calls quickly. I want to look up SMS quickly.

BTW, I can't believe SR1329 said email is the killer app for phones, then didn't say how bad the iphone email program is. Man it sucks! The nokias I have used were not better. But with iPhone... no attachments, no sending options, no threaded email (much more important than threaded sms as emails are usually about one topic but sms are, by definition, short messages)...and you can only keep a little bit on the phone at one time. And no search with iPhone email either. In short, the only thing iphone is better at is text imput.

Now to my question: SHOULD I BUY THE N97, OR WAIT FOR UPDATED 5800, or wait for better android phones? I'm not mentioning the OmniaHD because I am assuming it will be more expensive than the N97, which is already too expensive.

edit. Oh...Safari sucks. Unstable as hell. I thought browser on 5800 was difficult to navigate...and it was. But that browser never crashed all the time like Safari... maybe that is all because my phone is Jailbroken? I don't know.

It's not about sex, much less porn. I remember what my boss told me at my first job after college. "Do you know why I like good looking female co-workers? Because it makes the office look better and a much more interesting place to come to every morning". It is misogynistic, I know, but well, it was true.
Why do you think there are models in the booths in every show, no matter the industry? Or would you like to go to MWC, for instance, and see Susan Boyle at the Nokia booth presenting the N97?

I'm shipping it to a US address but it doesn't matter the country of origin for the credit card. You just need to call your order in because the website doesn't accept non-US CC addresses

The slashdot problem has been around forever. I don't even know what the problem actually is, but something funky is going on. My 5800 can't run it either. But this is one of the very rare sites where this happens, the browser works excellent for me everywhere else. I'm one of the few fans left who really fine the s60 browser awesome, and i can scroll while the page renders close to instantly. Then at the tail end there is that 4 second freeze up as the page finishes up. But that point i had already scrolled to where i want and already started reading the article or whatever.

Curious, can we have multiple destinations and set each to a different app? And why can't we use destinations to bypass all the nagging pop up windows when opening widgets? Wtf?

I may have to do some research on that. The fact is, I do work in an office where I have more than one email address...but I guess this "exchange" is either something I don't pay attention to nor understand. And btw...I do "work" on my phone..to the extent that I can read and reply to email and make the crucial phone call reliably-which from what I've heard, the Iphone seems to be lacking in. But I probably should ck out the email experience on an Iphone or Crackberry. I just don't have the time..due to work..lol

I've been on a break too but just because I haven't been around don't forget me :D This phone is luring me out of my break. I'm already selling off my 5800, N95-4, unlocked Storm, and iphone 3G.

I echo your sentiments in one of your other posts. The Bold is so good I just don't know if anything can be good enough to make me switch-not even the N97. Maybe a GSM version of the Palm Pre but I don't even know if that would do it.

Good call.

I'm also a bit worried about being uncomfortable typing with T9 because of the overall size. The 5800XM was thick, but it was also smaller.

Please don't spread what otherwise is a common marketing term "Economies of Scale" as something simple and common, when its not. Buying in bulk, and selling mass orders makes the choice of processor cheaper. Prototype boards are exactly THAT ... prototypes. ANYTHING can go wrong with them and a cpu CAN be changed VERY late in the design/prototype stage. Don't kid yourself into thinking 1-4 prototypes is ALL a phone company needs - EVEN as experienced as Nokia for such a high-end phone. Mobo production/design can be easily changed if a new cpu is selected - especially if hardware video accelleration is imbedded and specific chip outboard of the application processor can be shunned.

Yes it can be costly initially in development when changing a cpu and other chip components - but the antenna can be kept, battery connection points, 3.5mm jack placement, microsd slot, etc usually can be kept in the same location IF, and IF the cpu is the same socket, and the connectors match up to be the same. Now the cpu can be easily changed if the applications core, design features for supporting the OS (S60) and peformance thresholds are virtually the same if not more tolerant on the newer spec'd-cpu. Nokia knows very well what they're doing and so do there engineers.

Unless battery consumption is well out of their engineers design limits then a cpu is not specific to a devices design. However there are many devices that are different in this respect - E71 for example.

damn i'm also losing interest on this phone...cant justify 1000$CAD~ for this... rather save for something better maybe later on, or even considering other brands
