*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

I wouldn't bet my horses for tomorrow. I'll tell you what will happen tomorrow, 100 more curious posts only because it's 2nd June. I could be one of those 100. lol

I'm waiting for non pre order n97 to be available on eBay so I can use my 50$ coupon + MS live cashback which is 8%, hopefully it will increase.

Nokia is trying to emulate that success with the Ovi Store and I hope it has at least some success. Too bad Nokia couldn't set up carrier billing here in the States...

I really wonder if the side menu only dissapears when it's in the browser ? The only "application" that I've seen it dissapear in besides the browser is the facebook application.

If you look at the video above, it doesn't go away in Gravity or the music player for instance.

------------------------------------------

Playing with the emulator, I've noticed that there doesn't seem to be any smart dialing ? And the main phonepad doesn't have any letters on it either, just numbers like the 5800. On the positive side, it looks like you can use a virtual T9 to compose a message while in portrait mode, it just doesn't work (Error msg) in the emulator.

I'm not too sure just how true that statement is.

For years I've owned both a PDA and a phone. I currently use an HP iPAQ and a Nokia N95-3.

But I'm going to get the Nokia N97 as a replacement for both; it will become my "PDA-phone". May not suit you, but I'm hoping that it will be the PDA phone for me.

At the moment I run TomTom GPS, MobiPocket, AvantGo, calendar/address linked to Outlook, and a number of other programs on my iPAQ 210 because although there are the same or similar programs for the N93 the screen and lack of a usable keyboard (I use FITALY on the iPAQ) make the iPAQ more practical.

I'm really hoping that the larger screen size and the keyboard on the N97 will mean that I can leave the iPAQ and use the N97 for it's phone and PDA capabilities.

So, for me, but obviously not for you, the N97 will be, hopefully, my PDA-Phone.

Is that the only thing at all that makes sense to you?

Not at all possible that their focus groups and bean counters both agreed that they weren't on the right path pushing the technological envelope and Apple showed them that they didn't need to? That a computer company could enter into their turf with 411mhz of beastly power and take the reigns on multiple continents with a dumbphone feature set like 2mp camera, no flash at all, and draconian and utterly arbitrary control of the platform to tell their consumers what they needed and wanted while holding for near 3 years on basic features every other phone in the segment enjoyed? Then they decided to split the middle, while adding features they had previously discounted and/or ignored?

Let me get this straight... Your theory is that they would follow up with their greatest success ever with a mediocre backslide to simply to vacate their existing hardware stock instead of trying to improve on their own previous success?

You're entitled to your opinion, of course, but please forgive me for disagreeing.

I keep reading in various places that the 5800 has seemingly been a success, too. In this latest Russian review/preview of N97 no less.

In the meantime I'm here in this thread because I like N97 because it appeals to my apparently narrow specification desires and hope to see more news and reviews and previews of it, if not news of it's pending release. It doesn't meet yours, but why are you here again? Because you don't like it? Because you hope Nokia will avoid sending S60 to following UIQ based on this discussion? No acrimony or sarcasm intended. Genuinely curious. I'll have to catch up on in the morning, though.

Truthfully? Because I don't want any of you to get burned like Nokia has burned me for the past several years. $500 is perfect for that phone given the time it's being released and I'm sure you guys will be happy with your N97's (this arguing demands it). I just want people to understand the value (or lack thereof) in spending $700 on one when there's very little in it to make it worth that much when the competition is charging less.

And Uxi, again, the price difference is $650 NOW versus $700 in July (all USD). Who know what both the 8gb and 16gb OmniaHD will cost by then.

I've got a very dusty DS Lite sitting on my desk right now and my PS3 gets used so much, I'm really afraid it'll wear out sooner than it should.

It's not just about gaming. With better hardware more powerful apps can be created, games or not. Without powerful hardware, they can't. It's that simple. We'll never know what can come out of S60 with 256mb of RAM+faster CPU+hardware acceleration because people like you keep saying it's not necessary and nobody's going to do it just for Samsung's one handset.

Sure, but where does the complaining and constant reminding that the processor/hardware is considered fail end? Well if that's the case I think the N97 should have specs that should rival my laptop and do as much. That's what I really want.

Don't take chances. Just go to the post office and put a forward on your address.
Don't screw ith the addresses on the vendor end or you might get mad later for mistakes.

I think he meant that S60 is starting to halt innovation just like Palm seemed to back when. The similarities between the Symbian Foundation launch schedule and Palm swapping OS's to try to recover market share are starting to become very distinguished. The reason I have faith that Symbian might make it is because they have a plan instead of running around with their heads cut off.

The official thread is a beast, though. Only way it would work is if the original post was edited as an index to useful posts. There was also quite a bit of trolling in it just prior to the release.

I guess it's kinda surprised to most of us as all other Nokia NAM has never got such a big problem.
Might be AT&T is doing something try to defend their iPhone or discourage people using unbranded/unlocked phone

I used to carry a PDA and phone as well. Two years ago I began carrying just one device, I started with a pocket pc phone, but it was a terrible device. An S60 phone, Blackberry or iPhone can much more easily take the place of a PDA and phone. An N97 should do the job nicely.

I guess we'll have to wait for tracking info tonight. It would make my day if it shows up today by 10am today.

Please post here when you received it.

Good luck all!!!
