*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

If you are into gaming, that is i personally am not, i prefer the better video and camera then gaming but thats my usage, i personally am more interested in the n86 than the n97 while i wish the n86 had a higher resolution i also love the compact size and non touch screen. :buddies:

and can yuo explain why 8 is better then 5? what good is 8 when the sensor is so small it causes color issues? what about the small focal length being so small no matter what you do will cause the pic to have issues?

Definitely comes down to a business case and chiefly marketing. Ovi and their own site should be able to sell quite a few legit copies, though, from people either straight laced scrupulous typoes, those not willing to risk malware, etc or those who just aren't aware of "warez."

I didn't know that there was such a thread. But seriously, the Nokia phones which are manufactured in China do have a much lower build quality than the ones that are made in Finland. If you own one, you can definitely experience, feel and see the difference.

woops i keep thinking in US$ - $750 isnt too bad, I may wait a lil bit for it to come down, which will also give time for the blast of phones being released this summer to settle and get reviewed as well. I was hoping for $699.

The other thing I'm happy about is using this with ATT, and paying less for data, as opposed to using a regular "PDA" data.

I've used a number of phones with slide-out QWERTY's, and having the space bar in the middle is the best. Now, every time your typing with your right thumb and need to enter a space, you can't alternate between thumbs. You always have to use your right thumb. It may not sound horrible, but, I think it could slow you down, considerably. I also hate the number layout. With only one function button, it would've been nice to have a number pad on the opposite side.

^^^ Sure that was ad hominem against people I don't even know. But the truth is I don't have a better explanation for why this product is so behind the curve and so artificially limited from a company whose whole fanbase is built on the premise that they don't artificially limit anything. I mean 5 widgets? Ha Ha. This is supposed to compete with anything? This was supposed to make up for the amateur interface and touch response?

I don't care what you say about Apple, they may be lazy, they may be scum, they may be whatever word in the dictionary you choose, but damn the end product works. So as a paying customer that's all that really matters to me.

You though as much as Steve Jobs does whatever and his boys watch it at least he does it maybe days before the actual product launch. I personally watch none of those. I don't particularly even like Apple for that matter. I'll judge the device based on it merits and not the hype surrounding the product.

If the license transfers with SIM (and you are right on that in theory), then why can I not access any of my purchased travel guides? I can go into options -> blah blah -> license and it will actually report my license for those products. BUT when I try to use the guide it asks for a key, I entered the key I got in the e-mail following my purchase and it does not work. I called Nokia's US 1800 number about this, I talked with people at Nokia NYC store. Nobody had a solution beyond: "talk to the other" and "you will have to rebuy them". So it does not happen as you say it does in every case.

So if Nokia didn't start on a touch screen screen phone when the iPhone came out when did they? Huh? Since you seem to know so much about Nokia, your only two possible answers could be with the 7710 on S90 which was merged into S60. Or you could say in all their years of existence they never ONCE considered making a touch screen phone and when they saw the iPhone they spent a year deciding whether they too they should also make a touch screen phone sometime. And when they did decide to do it, they decided to copy its very form factor. Wow there really isn't a good answer for this one I'm afraid.

Server search doesn't really work for you because your cheap administrators won't store enough data on their exchange server? I pay $8.99 a month for 3GB of exchange hosting so ostensibly your company is too cheap to even pay in that range for each employee's e-mail. For me I need to access information. I am a student so sometimes a lecture, or information that was sent even years ago comes in handy when I am in the process of doing something. It comes in very handy on this environment. I think in general if you are going to have access to any resource the ultimate is to have full access to that resource. You would have to be an idiot or a moron to argue that less access to a data resource is better. When I need access to my music I keep a server that gives me access to ALL my music not just a part of it. I would maybe like to see what I sent out recently and MAYBE, just MAYBE I might want to have access to my exchange sent box for that purpose.

But I have to end by saying, those videos of the guy playing with that home screen like he discovered oil or something are indicative of the kind of talent Nokia has running software design.

N97 is up for preorder in Sweden as well as Germany and Italy. When asked about delivery by Mobil.se a Nokia source said 'within a couple of weeks'

"Using this time wisely" You mean like they did when they took the wraps off the 5800? Listen, you may be new to Nokia, but I'll tell you one thing about Nokia. They do not use time wisely. It seems they fight with the OS for years to implement something as simple as threaded SMS (still not done) or HTML e-mail (not done either but coming soon).

My point is not to bring those two oft-repeated points again and again, but rather to show you that that for the nearly 2 years they chased the iPhone they dropped that turd of a 5800 from their asses.

In the 6 months they have since the 5800, I expect nothing. Honestly nothing. Maybe the touchscreen will be more responsive, but overall the experience will suck.

I'm only saying this as someone who used to hope that Nokia would wake up. It's all wasted hope. Just trying to save you time. If you see something like the Palm Pre (the only device that has made Apple scared, BTW see iPhone 3.0 that's how they respond to a threat) and like it, don't bother playing the N97 game. They will come to you in June or July with the Euro model that they will proudly sell in their flagship stores. Then they will keep you waiting for months to get the same crappy touch interface in a NAM version. So sometime in October you will get to see how poorly implemented S60v5 is. Or you could waste $350 right now and see how bad it is for only half the money. You'll save yourself the futility of a long wait as well.

Just saying.

I was not a fan of the first Iphone and did not buy one, but when Apps and 3G rolled out, I was all for it. However, they did revolutionize touch devices with multi touch. Tech may have been available, but nobody produced a cell phone with it.

Haha...Jonty. I loved the Bold too and think it's a well made device. If you are a emailing junky/messaging junky. I guess nothing beats a Blackberry. When are you going to get the N97? I want to hear your opinion since you hated the 5800 so much.
