*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

Well I like my 5800 but it really suffers from the lack of compatible software. June is not that far away and I'm not sure if nokia/other companies are going to release lots of new apps by the time N97 launches. I remember when before someone mentioned anything positive about iphone in s60 forums people would butcher him but now they kind of stay quite. Lots of shortcomings of iphone are taken care of now. Slowly but surely it's getting better and better. Right now (after the release of OS 3.0) all it needs is a good camera and speakers. Fact is a fact, S60V5 is far from being as intuitive as iphone. Don't get me wrong, I want nokia to succeed and surpass all its competition but it's slowing down in a race.
 
In my use nothing has been faster and more accurate than a qwerty with predictive text like the E71. my biggest problem with t9 is that u have to spell the word right! With the predictive text on the E71 I can just get close and the phone will automatically correct the word. I really hope the N97 with will have predictive text with the qwerty (i know the 5800 didn't; or at least I couldn't find it)
 
From this article, I am a little concerned with how AT&T plans to release the Ovi store to its customers. It is bad enough to consider the potential banning of apps that would conflict with AT&T services, but I would hate for the user experience to be deteriorated from another possible issue such as billing integration with current carrier plans.
 
Well the majority of the hype I had for this phone has left, just can't justify spending $600-700 on this. Maybe it'll be back when the phone ships but I was expecting a lot more from this phone.

I have qualms with all the other big devices coming out this summer too so it's not just Nokia, but hopefully apple puts out something i'd be interested in buying or else I'll keep waiting.
 
It might make sense to put the space bar there, but we've been using QWERTY keyboards for so long that had the space bar in the middle - it will be a little bit longer to get used to that layout. I also don't like it from looking at it; why not just stick the damn bar where it's supposed to be?
 
Have you tried the new version of backgrounder?

It's a LOT better than the initial version, yes those apps do run in the background but it always takes at least 2-4 seconds for them to let you actually do something. When I have the phone application on backgrounder, I can start using it within the second it opens up without having to wait for it to load the contacts like it would on a stock iPhone. It's actual multitasking now.

I'm not justifying that my iPhone can do tasks like that reliably because it can't with only 40mb of ram available, i'm saying the new iPhone will be a monster with this kind of app already available.

Again, was that picture with ~50mb ram available in the N97 with or without widgets on?
 
Alright, let's take a different approach.

What if this trend continues each season consistently. Nokia continues to build smartphones with the amount of RAM and processors from last year at competing prices, always being 2 steps behind the competition, while all other manufacturers are developing applications and games that can use the newer hardware. Some of those other manufacturers are still using S60 for their OS of choice as well with the new hardware. The result of this is that every other manufacturer progresses to the next level, including S60 from someone other than Nokia, and we start to see Nokia take a back seat to the latest and greatest mobile tech. Would all of you STILL defend them then?

Actually Nokia have a very good 1 week return policy in NYC at least. If you return the phone in like new conditions, they will give you a full refund even if the box is opened.

So when my pre-order comes. I can play with it for one week and return it if it turns out to be a big lemon.

Well if you read the article in Wired magazine about the development of the iPhone, you'll learn about the tyrannical nature of Steve Jobs and how scared the developers and engineers were when they brought forth a prototype that was buggy and crashed frequently. He simply said "We don't have a product" and left the room. Considering he is a man known for expressing his anger, this freaked everyone out to the point that they made what we know as the iPhone. If you demand respect, you will get respect. If you demand perfection, you get something pretty damn close every time. They knew what kind of phone they set out to make and that it would have a touch interface, so the UI had to match that. Everything since has been a rushed copycat device (because y'know, that's how they do stuff in the western world), even though the iPhone wasn't the first touchscreen device, hell it wasn't even the first touchscreen device to get it right (a lof of previous touch devices were great, just not as popular). But leave it up to Steve Jobs and the big, bad Apple marketing machine to get people to buy anything they want them to.
