*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

You don't need to accept anything. Former Federal Agents fired for excessive brutality aren't going to kick in your door and make you click on the order button. :silly:

I can accept it's the prime function for yu0. You have 4 left. You have more than 5 primary cannot lose functions? What device are you using that fulfills these functions that N97 won't? What attracts you to N97 at all? It's obviously not the device for you?

Again, what's your motive? Are you just trolling this thread for responses? Are you hoping someone at Nokia is going to read? Do you hope to get a bunch of "me too's"? Honest question, cause I don't understand your purpose.

You can certainly see the words I"m typing but apparently aren't understanding them when they're put together. Not sure how I can be any more clear.

Sure, except it's not a dilemma to me. ;)

I digressed for a moment to ponder another possibility (another Home Screen) is certainly possible conceptually, but we need to know the max memory footprint of it, much less how it would scale. I haven't gotten that deep into the SDK yet, have you?

We're certainly aware of the last most famous post on how much memory available on startup. Maybe you want more RAM and are prepared to pay $800 instead of $700? I'll be happy paying $500, thanks. :)

I'm not sure what you do for a living, but in the software world, we call this "feature creep." Crawl, walk, run is the proper order of operations. 5800 was crawl... this is walk. Run might not be until later in N97 firmware lifespan... or maybe not until N97-4 or N98. Obviously, you shoudln't buy it if that's not acceptable to you.

No, not only should you not buy, you shouldn't get worked up over something that's obviously not going to satisfy, and again, I'm curious on your motivation. If it's so obviously unable to meet your needs, what's your point?

FWIW, I haven't owned a Nokia since the 3390. For many reasons. came VERY close to N95-8Gb and most eagerly awaited N96 lurking it's official thread... until I finally saw how much it was and what I'd be getting. I didn't troll the N96 thread talking about how much Nokia or N96 sucked, though. I simply didn't buy one and moved on.

N97 is what's finally bringing me back. ;)

Still pretty good compared to the N96 cycle. :D

My point isn't that 5 should be enough for you. It's that 5 is probably enough for most of the people that Nokia is making this phone for.

Sure, I think we have a consensus that the software optimization is the issue and not simply throwing hardware at it, which would be raising the cost.

I would NOT be interested if the phone debuted at $800+ and you wouldn't be reading my words in this thread if it were. I'd be waiting until it was between $500-700 street unlocked/unsubsidized.

So that means you have that list of mid-range $300 unsubsidized phones that match N97's specs right?

Actually I'm not sure I've ever called her or had her call me with a nokia n-series phone....using att pre-pay voice is expensive, but data and txts are cheap. Hard to ignore a txt :crying:

Now before I go any further i'd like to point out that i have no idea about programming or anything of that sort. Just been reading some of your thoughts on the kinetic scrolling and how it should be implemented throughout the entire OS, menu's and all. From what I remember reading S60v5 was originally developed to work on touchscreen AND non-touchscreen phones. Now when using my 5800 if i don't use the scroll bar and instead touch on the screen and drag down to scroll through menu's, the OS looks like its reacting as it would if i was using a d-pad to scroll. This surely makes sense if it has indeed been designed to work with a d-pad aswell as touch? So i'm just wondering how easy it would be to implement kinetic scrolling in the menu's if the OS is in fact seeing my touch and drag as nothing more than me scrolling with the d-pad? Hopefully that all makes sense, if not I blame it on being very tired :)

do we know what bands will the NAM version have? 850/1900/2100?
and it is thought to be released somewhere between Q3 and Q4 right? argh...i don't know if I should buy a n79 now or wait for the n97... I guess i'll at least wait until the MWC next week

Like this isn't happening already? (have you forgotten last quarter dismal results and shrinking market share). I guess a lot of die hard s60 users were regarding the n97 as nokia's hail mary. disappointing indeed :buddies:

I'm tellin ya..it's like when we were 10 yrs old..2 wks seemed like an eternity. Seems like 2 seconds now-I could care less if this thing doesn't hit til August..September.

I agree. The E71x can possibly turn out to be one example in comparison to my unlocked E71.

On the other hand, forming a partnership with AT&T could be a great venture for Nokia to introduce potential software services to American customers.

Your plan is associated with your phone account... not at all restricted/locked to the device you are using. Just like if you lost your phone, you will still be paying for service (until you cancel)

The n97 might be the last high end s60 device nokia releases.
s60 is currently in the process of being relegated to lower end phones before finally being put out to pasture. Symbian foundation phones from nokia are expected by years end.

Blaxx, Pandora was created by the "Music Genome Project." It works differently than Last.FM.

Last.FM works by looking at people's listening habits by artist (People who like Coldplay also like the Killers).

Pandora attempts to isolate what it is about a specific song that makes you like it, and finds other songs that share those elusive qualities.

I've heard its creators interviewed before and it sounds very interesting, and scientific. But Last.FM is a lot more intuitive.

Here here...well, for me I preordered the N97 for a great price. So I'll get it, try it, use it for a firmware upgrade or 2 and see what's up. I have to admit that the Iphone is very impressive, but I just can't seem to pull the trigger on such a subsidized device.

Yea, completely agree with the points you mentioned. I mean, Apple nailed the UI for their 1st time (Granted their OS implementation is still questionable). Nokia IMHO should've done a better job being a bigger company, more mature in the phone segment. I guess 5800 was the guinea pig?
