*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

I don't get why Nokia keeps releasing their phones in simili-black. Why a dark grey e71 instead of the black that everyone loves? Same goes for the N97 which would look much better in dark black instead of washed-out black. I bet they will release a real black N97 in a couple of months. I don't get why Nokia keeps "downgrading" their phones intentionally.

Sounds pretty good, but not incredibly detailed. Didn't indicate any problems multitasking. Looks like the amber backlighting from Eldar's brown unit is gone entirely.

So far everyone has raved about the QWERTY so expectations are raising (after already being high), hopefully not unrealistically so. Nice to hear about the voice dialing and FM transmitter from someone, even if really vague.

As long as it's not a knockoff, it'll work. I'd suggest getting as fast a card as possible though. The largest for 16gb microSD is Class 4 right now, which is about $80 on Amazon. Class 2 16gb microSD cards are a little more than half that, but they're also much slower for performance and transferring data.

Looks tempting. $699 for the pre-order? I assume once the phone is launched, the price will be more than that right? I'm just worried about any flaws there might be on the first batch.

I agree! But the bottom line is the seamless operation. For an average user.. iPhone renders web pages & emails just like in PC. Youtube videos are played almost instantly. All applictions run at lightening speed! Hence no need to worry about RAM/CPU etc., Sure, it doesn't multi task. But how many users really multitask except us crazy folks at hofo? ;) :p

I highly doubt N97 will sell like iPhone, not to mention 3.0 could be released even before N97!

Is it just me or has the screen quality that's been shown in the recent videos and pics of the N97 seem much worse than what was shown on preproduction units? Some of the videos I've seen the screen looks fake it looks so good. Some of these recent shots have me concerned.

I have a generation one E90. The one with the tissue paper screens and touching keyboard. I paid several hundred dollars for something with the build quality of a post rear-end Ford Pinto, nothing can top that as a fail.

Despite the numerous scratches (for $1000 the screen could've been made out of optical glass, it's not like they were trying to slim down the phone), and especially the pits on the interior screen from the keyboard, I still love the E90, so hopefully the 5800 would be a repeat of that experience.

For 90% or more people out there, they only brag about the iPhone and won't notice what Nokia has offered in N95, only until they see picture taken (which has been surpassed some other phones anyway) and still superior video recording.
Very often they asked me what camera it is.

You're talking to a guy who didn't get his passport until 8:20 this morning, do you really think I'm gonna start packing 19 hrs before my flight?

I'm playin, while I did only pick up my passport this morning (applied for it 2 weeks ago and I'm glad I got in before they changed the border laws because the line of applicants this morning was HUGE) but I finished packing last night. All I have left to do tonight is shave my head and cut my birthday cake.

Nice find, but not a good option for international customers; They will need to supply images of the front and back of their credit card to complete the order. Im sure as hell not comfotable with that

Well honestly I am furious..Basically Nokia attempted to charge my card twice. I dont really know what that means for my order, and I dont understand what is going on but i dont like it. I have my receipt so they better honor it.

So, we all agree that the N97 will be fine in terms of performance and usability.

But, would you not agree that more RAM and a better CPU would benefit in a way? No, I don't mean just slapping a better CPU and more RAM onto the N97 as it is. I mean on the next device, we should be asking for more CPU and RAM.

You argue that we would have devices that could already do it better. What happened to innovation and convergence? If we want to bring our smartphones to do things more like dedicated devices, let's step up that CPU and RAM! This is a move that Nokia can do and not another company. Look, Samsung just released the OmniaHD which kind of brings in HD recorder convergence, but what we want is more than just that; we want S60 to grow (even if it's on it's deathbed) and this can happen with better CPU and RAM.

It's like when I went from a dumbphone to S60 in general. Now, I'm sticking with S60 but I want to see it grow.

It's not about how many people will buy N97, or if the N97 will pale in comparison to the OmniaHD. It's about Nokia's flagship device not pushing the envelope and kind of "standing still" instead of moving forward.

The N85 camera is excellent. N86 is not out yet, so we dont know about the camera. More megapixels is NOT always better. When I want to take a studio-quality photograph I'm going to pull out my dSLR. When I want spur-of-the-moment or just to share with friends, I'm going to use my phone. 3000 more pixels is not going to make or break an image. No phone ever is going to replace a real camera, not even a p&s. Get over the camera already.

This morning I just shot photos of outdoor furniture that my company is going to sell. I did not use the camera in my 5800XM for this. It would not have been appropriate. The N86 camera would not have been any more appropriate. I used my Pentax dSLR, which 'only' shoots at 10 megapixels, but is SLR and has a huge sensor and the other things that make it a good camera.

The only thing I would change about the N97 so far, without having my hands on one yet, is that I would make the hinges out of something other than plastic. I'm nervous that will be a failure point.

...those are your words, not mine. If that's how you perceive people who defend the iPhone, then I guess our perspectives could be very different.

You did say your solution to the low RAM is turning off the widgets, which are again, your words. I'm not twisting anything.
