Well we have to keep in mind that the 5800 XpressMusic is the first S60 touch device so there are bound to be bugs. Additionally, since it's a mid-tier device, it probably doesn't have the lofty hardware specs of the N97. At least this is how I explain how the N97 is so responsive and the 5800 XM is a bit sluggish. It's just the evolution of the OS. When something else comes out after the N97, it will probably crap all over it too. If you need an analogy, it's like how Metal Gear Solid 4 looks leaps and bounds better than anything else on PS3 because its the evolution of developing for that console, developers know the hardware a bit better and can harness it better. Same thing with this go round with S60 touch, Nokia's engineers know it a lil better, know what worked well in the 5800 XM and what didn't and are able to tweak. We've yet to see the full potential, this is just the beginning.
I do however agree that besides the iPhone, everyone is just slapping touchscreens onto phones that are not equipped with an OS/UI meant to accomodate it.
