*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

Interesting that it didn't seem to have an effect, though. The page came up right after. Is that usual S60 behavior? I would have imagined he would have to close and reopen the browser or did it kill a background app or something?

He was doing alot of stuff bouncing around and going back into bookmarks, etc with that Expose style tab switching thing. Even an iPhone guy might have been a bit impressed by that. Except for that part at the very end where it just wasn't seeing his finger despite 3 or 4 scroll attempts. lol

Not me. I will wait until the NAM is released. I have an E71 and N96. My question is, should I unload my N96 now, or when the N97 is released...

It's interesting that even with the A8 600Mhz CPU and 256MB RAM Apple is just claiming that the new iPhone will be "up to 2x faster in average", this makes me think that the real gain with this new architecture may not be that noticeable in everyday use, it would be nice to be able to get benchmarks like 3DMark, PCMark, etc. to get numbers about the value (price/performance) offered by different mobile devices.

You know what sucks? Yes I have my N97 preordered but until then I'm using my iPhone, meaning NO Skyfire, meaning, I can't see half the videos posted until I get home :-/ Just wanted to vent! LOL Symbian here I come! The N97 better deliver!

....and I love it lol. I got work from 4-1030 but im trying to get everything in or atleast as much as I can now. I think the keyboard doesn't have much feedback but somehow I've gotten comfortable with it in less than 30 minutes. More like 30 seconds after I started using it.

I'm going to try to get some apps on there and fix the widgets. Seems I may have to reboot so that the weather on the screen will show in Fahrenheit instead of Celsius. In the app when I press it it shows, but not on the screen. Same with facebook. Shows nothing on screen but im logged in. Email setup immediately for my gmail account.

Is there any benefit by using Nokia Messaging over the built-in client?

Ah, I'm in love

I've never liked white devices but I've been leaning towards it with the N97. Then I saw the pics that Jonty just posted and I'm back in the black camp.

Since I'm going to wait for the intial reviews/experiences before I decide to get it, I might change my mind yet again.

Giving me ideas, too. :D I've been thinking I was going to stay EDGE on T-Mo, but considering doing an AT&T 3G plan with new iphone. Sell the iPhone and just pop their SIM in my N97.... wonder how much I'll be able to get for one new and unspoiled. :D

I still really like the service and voiceplan I have with T-Mo, though. If I never cancelled my $2.99 T-zones, I probably wouldn't be considering this.

No, sr1329 assures that he wont buy this or the n86.

Let Blaxx love the phone. Even if it turns out to be terrible, it cant be worse than those who payed $1000+ for the n96 or the bb storm, and its certainly better than paying $700 for an iphone as many people are still doing today.

Blaxx, please be the first to buy it on launch day and take as many videos as you possibly can.

Just a couple of quick questions, this is my first Nokia in a long, long time, does the NAM N97 from their NAM Nokia site, ship with a car charger? If not, is there any real danger if I were to buy just some cheapy $5 one off ebay? I really don't want to fry a $700 toy lol. Thanks in advance guys.

I'm probably going to get the first version, and hope 1900 works here, and then when the NAM version comes, get that later (if I still like it i.e)

But this is the converging device for me!

Sure the will be some discrepancy, after all you're trying to compare a desktop to a phone. However, given that, it seems pretty consistent to me, pinch is pinch whether on *the desktop or on the phone.*

Superior size size vs superior screen resolution? It's a wash in my opinion. But when you're talking screen real-estate, as you where, obviously size matters.*

Yes if you need more storage obviously more is better, however, I don't, and the three partitions are a pain.*

My point is I have two simple App stores and both work great. Cydia doesn't have any influence from Apple or AT&T so I can get plenty without the watchful eye of those overlords. No headache, no compatibility issues, no signed v unsigned.

Yeah, multitasking is alive and well in 3GS ville. Cydia's Backgrounder works great, and with the beefy CPU/RAM I gotta say, that grass is mighty green over here :)

You might not be much of a scroller but seeing how popular say, desktop mouses are, or touch screens, or touch pads on loptops I'd say your probably in the minority. Scrolling is king. Oh, and if I don't feel like scrolling, I'll use spotlight, no clicking folders thank you :) Again, the 3GS is speed and efficiency.*

Well*looks*like*your*more*technicailly*savy*than am I because I have no idea what you talking about at the end. I'm much more a simple, 'i like my stuff to wirk' kinda guy.

No I haven't fallen for anything. I had the N97 for a bit. In fact, traded in my 3G for it. Tried out for a bit and kept finding myself saying, 'god I wish I just had my iPhone back', luckily, shortly after the 3GS launched and suddenly I found myself much much happier with the 3GS than the N97. I'm not an Apple fan boy, I'm a fan boy of what works best for me and the 3GS certainly works better for functional use than any other unit out today.*

The whole point of the S60 browser is to not have to visit WAP pages. Go to any page on any site EVEN THIS ONE and see what happens.

If it isn't happening then the ESPN mobile site must have no JS and must have been designed for Pocket Internet Explorer - the worst mobile browser in the world.

That browser is the lowest common denominator of mobile browsers. If it works on that browser it works on any browser.

It happens on any shopping site you go to, it happens on Nokia's homepage, it happens on any except those designed for PIE or the BB browsers of 2 years ago.

The big deal about the S60 browser was that it could go to any site and that it obviates the need to seek out mobile versions of sites. In that respect it mostly works, but it takes 3 minutes to load Kayak or Hotwire. So it was a great start for 3.5 years ago very impressive then. But now fast forward 3.5 years and the expectation is that that sites that took 3 minutes to load in hardware from the mid-2000s would load in about 20-30 seconds with today's modern hardware and continual software optimizations.

But it seems neither Nokia nor its diehard customers really look for any improvement in anything.

I let out an audible "ooooh" when I saw that link.
I wonder if the white N97 comes with a white AD-54 adapter.

One thing I'm looking forward to is the Music Player widget.
With the lock switch, it should be two steps to pause a track and start talking to people. It takes eight steps to do so on my N82 without the AD-54.

Also glad to see there's a music screensaver that should show what's now playing.

If you want to try modifying the phone, you don't even have to wait for the n97. Use a 5800 or n85 and see if they can double its ram. Same result would apply to the n97.
