*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

Does it make calls and can send/receive text messages? Yes? Then that's fine by me. I don't know about all these ARMs and LEGs and OMAPs and VTECs but from what I've seen, the phone meets my needs and is the first phone I've actually wanted since the N95 so I ask you gentlemen (and wirelessgal)....

It is from a chinese site, but it shows some really cool transitions in the picture viewer and them playing an n-gauge game.

On another note - on the audio unboxing, did anyone else pick up about half way through that they have already gotten the phone to crash twice? Allbeit they are probably overloading it trying to get it to crash.

They did point out, though, that the nokia press release states that very big software updates are slated for Q3 this year - bigger upgrades than they have offered on any phone before - sounds promising (especially if there are lots of bugs - and there will be bugs) Maybe Skype and a virtual keyboard will be included :hehehe:
 
I shall be receiving my black Nokia N97 next week after purchasing from a friend who had taken advantage of the NokiaUSA pricing glitch. I bought this model at a price that was even cheaper than the initial $600 I was to pay Amazon for a white version!

Even though this version is black, I think that it is a good move to switch the colors since the white does look like more of a toy. The lesser price point is also well worth it! :clapping:
 
In a sense they are. HSDPA is a subset of UMTS that allows for higher data rates. But they are both WCDMA systems (Code Division Multiple Access) versus GSM which is a TDMA system (Time Division Multiple Access). Under GSM you have GPRS (2G) and EDGE (2.5G). I know, I know, crazy to keep track of.

Let me tell you my experience with the N97.. The 1st time I've handled the N97 it had light leaked all over the place, and it was missing some of the keys. Reboots and freezes every time I open something.

2nd time I played with the N97 light leaks were fixed, still missing (.) period button, the phone was responsive but was very slow.

3rd time which was last Friday.. The phone was very responsive, it felt pretty good in terms of opening programs. It looked like it was ready to be launched and finally found the (.) by pressing (sym).

So the bottom line was this phone was pretty much busy evolving every month I play with it at the S60 meet up.

So I pretty much agree with what the guy over at Symbian Freak about his 1st hand impression.
 
I never feel that I need to use 2 hands. It is big (and heavy) enough that if you are going to be using it for a while then two hands can be comfortable. So you see people using it that way. Even I do it sometimes when I'm sitting down at a table or desk and using it.

But never have I felt like I needed two hands. If I have a second hand free I might every now and then use it for a quick zoom in documents like PDF because they don't have the ability to perfectly double tap zoom in those. But if its in my right hand i can use the same hand to do it fairly comfortably with my forefinger and thumb.

The 5800 is more comfortable to hold for sure, but for browsing it's not worth it. You will have to click through 3 levels of menus and back taking 3-4 seconds to do what the "okay" sign does in about a second on the iPhone.
 
If anyone got the Clarivue screen protector, did you get the clear or anti-glare? I'm afraid the anti-glare might darken the screen a lot, but it also might be useful not to have the glare. I would order both but it seems a little expensive.
 
hey guys, i'm new to smart phones. what r some things i might need to know?

i was wondering what's the difference between installing apps on the MicroSD instead of the main flash memmory. does it work faster in one than the other?
 
I think Nokia was really trying to combat the new iPhone with the launch of the Ovi Store. We'll have to see as it becomes more available.

You want to talk about frustrations? Be glad you're on the N97 side of the fence. Most of the users on HoFo are relatively intelligent so that we can all keep up a well-mannered argument. After visiting some other specific forums dedicated to the i8910, I feel like I'm teaching preschoolers how to count. Most of the Orange-exclusive owners on other sites don't even know how to install applications and are complaining of poor battery life when they're leaving everything open in the background. The guys who bought it and post her are okay, but elsewhere? :doh:

There seems to be a lot of people here who are going to be new to S60v5 or S60 in general, but I have really high expectations that we won't have to revisit all of the typical ins and outs of S60 just to get people educated. You guys are smarter than that.
 
I just got word from a friend that his N97 is shipping out today.

I am holding off on reacting until I find out further info on where he ordered it.
 
Surely they won't. If they do fail to release a model with 850MHz 3G support, I won't be buying. I don't have 1900MHz 3G available, only 850. (and maybe someday AWS from T-Mo)
 
i'm confused about its thickness. on gsmarena it says the thickness is from 15.9-18.3mm. is the 15.9 for where the keyboard is, and 18.3mm is when you take the screen into account? in a photo where they had it right next to an SE X1, the n97 seemed thicker. the X1 is about 17mm.
 
Good, stay away. If you were to take my n97 I would have to go into CHUCK NORRIS MODE. The movie would be called DELTA FORCE 97 - can you imagine the product placement in that flick?
