*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

Received my N97 yesterday and really don't feel as impressed as I thought I would. Overall build quality seemed great for being plastic, and the slider is truly solid. The qwerty buttons are disappointing due to lack of ample tactile feedback like on the E71, but I am getting used to the layout and find myself typing a bit faster on day two.

Media playback is not bad at all and is of course better than my business-centric E71. Music playback is a bit louder and richer with stereo and videos are pretty great to watch on the screen.

Luckily, I was able to install Missing Sync for Symbian and have it work to sync all PIM data even though it was deemed incompatible by a pop-up message from the device (which I simply ignored). Nokia Sports Tracker and Messaging loaded without trouble and seem to work perfectly, although I haven't taken the Tracker app on a run yet.

A bit bummed to find out that a Quickoffice editing version isn't avilable yet, but I can wait nonetheless. Predictive text with the qwerty seemed like a good idea, but it only seemed to be more of a hindrance, so I turned it off.

I have the rest of the weekend to play with this and make some review videos.

One thing that has been stumping me is how to copy and paste and input the comma from the qwerty keypad.

A little update. Since I don't normally get CCs declined I called Amex and asked about the order. They showed the auth request from brightpoint at 3:04MST and 13:03MST and did not show it being declined. From their end they had no issues at all with the purchase.

I called Nokia back and talked to Brian. He basically admitted "well it was in error anyways and Nokia canceled the purchase. The credit card was not declined and there was no issue with it. They let some through, but not all and they have being receiving phone calls all day about this." I'm guessing since my wife bought one, and I got one too, maybe they were limiting them to one per address/house/family name/something.

Since I actually want the N97 and could care less about the headset I replaced the order. Guess what, it cleared within 45 minutes.

It's nice Nokia honored some anyways. Kinda leaves a bad taste in my mouth though. Nokia USA should really get their act together.

The factory video will keep me up for at least another hour before getting to sleep! :clapping: Even though a date is still not definite, it is good to at least not have to wonder if the N97 is ready for shipment.

lol yea i meant N97 NAM 3G won't work with t-mobile...thanks a lot...dat sucks tho...i was finally about to make the jump to 3G...i don't even use Edge right now..well...i guess i don't have a choice..but at least if the NAM version is more expensive than the Globalo one, i won't care :p

Have you ordered a 8910 yet? Im curious what your opinions are going to be of it. I also am considering picking this up either before or instead of the N97, 3g or no 3g.

i have to agree. AT&T used to always have the better phones, at least here in the US, but since the iPhone has been on the market it seems as if they've put all their eggs in one basket. IMO TMO, Verizon, and now with the Pre coming up, perhaps even Sprint has passed them in hotter phones.

Other than the Bold and iPhone AT&T's selection is crap. I walked into the store today with my Xperia, you should have seen the guys that work there oohing and ahhing. Can only imagine what the N97 will do to them when I have one!

based on what youve said and the fact that you also want a snappy processor and the phones have the same OS, wouldnt you prefer the omnia hd? im just going by what you listed. its faster, better camera, same os, and touch screen mp3. other than your apparent allegiance to nokia, i dont understand your selection.

HTC Magic doesn't look much better. Can we get some different form factors please?

Android is going to crash and burn quickly if all the devices look the same.

Concerning the price factor mentioned above, FRICKIN' RIDICULOUS! Yes, I was one of those who paid $1059 shipped price for an E90 two years ago. It was temporary insanity on my part, caught up in the hype also. Then it ends up having build issues with the kb/screen. While nokia laughs all the way to the bank. I will wait for a sizeable price drop if I even consider this phone. The E75 is even to much imho when I already have the 71 and 66. I hope you early adopters don't have to many first batch issues. We all know how that goes.

Good stuff, guess I'm taking an extended lunch break tomorrow to check out the production model of the N97. :D

Still amazes me to hear people can type out 60 wpm on a phone...

So nokia obviously had this phone planned for some time. It shows where the n96 falls into their line up. They want that model designated as the mobile tv broadcast device, and the n97 the social networking internet device. i wonder id the n97 had tv if it would just have been too much...
