I've said some of this before. The N97 looks like a convergence of convergence devices. I can literally take my N810/N95-4/E71 and mush them into a single package; great multimedia, large screen, nice cam, etc.
My problem is that I think that for me I need a business oriented device. Looking back at my N95 usage the only thing I thought I lost was the QWERTY but I was wrong. I use MfE to get my email and sync calendar/notes/to-do and for the programs being the same the functionality is totally different between the N95 and the E71. Data is displayed differently, much quicker and easier access on the E71. Here's a pic I found on the web which shows MfE on the N96 and the E71. My N95 really only shows four messages instead of five but with the larger screen you'd think you'd get more information, not less. No date or time info. MfE is very clunky on the N series.
I then did some searching for MfE functionality on the 5800 to garner some expectations on the N97. To my relief it looks like there is a nice improvement to the data displayed on the screen. The calendar looks updated from what we've seen on the N-series so it looks like it may be a better business solution that the older N-series. So while I see more emails I'm still missing times. It looks like it may separate emails based on the date similar to Nokia Messaging.

One thing I love about the E71 is it's business focus and this whole new dilemma for me comes from this lack of business focus on the N series. I have quick access to my calendar/email/notes/etc. on the home screen and I'm unsure how the widgets are going to provide this information. Can I get into my MfE inbox quickly with a single touch? Notes? It looks like I can keep a calendar shortcut but can I see what meetings I have coming up? With the expectation that Nokia will have a couple more touch devices coming out before the end of the year, will one of them be an E series? Maybe something more easily qualified as an E90 replacement? I like using my E71 more often than not but I would love to have the video/music/camera capabilities of the N95 integrated into the same device. I'm going to regret getting the N97 if a sexy, large screened E series device drops or is announced towards the end of the year.

The 5800 and N97 run on the same hardware and will more than likely perform exactly the same. That is why you have people *****ing about the processor, because the 5800 can't even run one of it's preloaded 3D games (was it bounce?) without lagging.
I'd expect the newer phones to have capacitive touch screens like an iPhone as there was a rumor going around about it, better processors like the rest of nokia's lineup now, a new design, and a new interface.

I've already mentioned about 50pages ago that N97 includes the use of an older Toshiba graphics chip - about 2yrs old but somewhat sufficient.
^ I was the one really wanting this. IT is VERY important and key to this devices success in daily use; especially for E71 users.
Personally, I love this N97 in every way ... yet I'm on the fence if I should take a chance on it. I believe that the N86 improves on the N85 NAM I have and will most likely go for that instead. Samsung has being doing an excellent job countering what Nokia has made in the past 12-15mths and I'm hoping their counter to the N97 will have some metal accents, use OMAP3430 proven cpu architecture and same price range with NAM to ship day 1 of announcement. Heck an S60 guy can dream right??

The ridiculous idea (on the part of web designers, not you) that a website should be laid out exactly the same on every single device with pixel purpose accuracy is the bane of the mobile web browser. HTML is supposed to be reflowed, reformatted, and generally made to look as is appropriate for the device it is being viewed on, not crammed into a space it was never intended to go.

The widgets look ok. The ratio of junk/useless ones to ones that have a little bit more of mainstream appeal is pretty high. I hope this changes soon.
I usually despise white phones but there is something about the white N97 that is just so...appealing.

Sorry, I thought that was implied. I don't know how the N82 had enough demand to be sold in North America but not enough demand for a NAM version. You don't see em selling N81s now do you? (Such an awful, awful phone btw)

i wish the touch screen is a little bit more sensitive then the 5800 and it would be perfect!

That version of garmin doesn't support the 5800 NAM for some reason though...runs just fine on the euro versions.

Please, forget the N97 vs i8910 argument, because that's NOT what I'm talking about. I would gladly give Nokia a pass on using the same camera, not using a capacitive, OLED screen, and anything else that they didn't include that the i8910 has as long as they had improved the processor and the RAM.
People have argued very well that support for Samsung using the OMAP3 processor won't be very good because developers won't want to bother creating more advanced applications that utilize the hardware of one single S60 phone. So in short, the N97 will get all the development attention because it's going to sell much better than the i8910 (and I agree).
But THAT'S THE PROBLEM. If Nokia had decided to use the better hardware in their better-selling, flagship Nseries, then developers WOULD create more applications that would use it and we would effectively move into 2009, now that it's half way over. Instead, you and everyone else who shares the same idea have to settle for what they've put in it, and to make it worse, you do it with a smile.

Well we're just comparing strictly on a 'Should I buy an N85 or 5800? These are my needs' basis. We know that they really don't match up directly...this isn't CNET News where everything gets compared to the iPhone 3G and only reason other manufacturers make phones is to create an 'iPhone Killer' (my most hated term of 2008 and 2009)

I'm seeing that all of the long-time Nokia fans who would swap it out after a couple months are also the ones not really interested in it at all. It's the new users who want to keep it for a couple years that are defending Nokia's poor decision making so much.
