*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

UGH! I didn't realize that I was at 2,999 and my 3000th post was in the thread about whether S60 will be overtaken by Android lol. I don't think I'm going to buy it from SN Traders. Just seeing that the N96 NAM is selling for $840 over there tells me that they will price the N97 at something astronomical. They have $15,000 8800s for god's sake. I'm probably going to go to NYC or Chicago at launch and buy one from the flagship store.

Just to follow up on some things about widgets form last night.
WRT widgets have been around for years. With s60v5, the API has been expanded to allow you to access almost any capability on the phone, including the gps, camera, memory and cpu info, ability to manage PIM events, etc. So you can write a fully functioning app that can actually dm things.
Another key concept is the difference between widgets and home screen widgets. They are not the same thing. A home screen widget may launch a full screen widget, a classic app, a website, or something else. A widget can have a home screen widget or not.

If they want to de-throne the iPhone as the king of NAM smartphones they need to make a NAM. I personally hate the iPhone and don't think its anything special, but sales numbers are what I'm speaking of.

If Nokia plays it well they could have a huge hit.

Just got back from NYC flagship. Did not buy as I think 700 plus tax is too steep for this phone (even though I bought the n95-2 at full price when it was first released)

Played with it for 5 mins. Thoughts
- store was quiet, no frenzy or atmosphere over the n97.
- phone does not feel cheap, feels like a quality phone
- I expected the phone to be too large, it actually right. Comfortable to hold. No complaints over the size
- OS seems decent speed, some pauses in some places, but over good but not blazing fast
- camera took a few seconds to process a photo. I was hoping to be able to hit out multiple shots. Took several seconds to start the camera too, nothing instaneous.
- screen looked crisp, sharp. No complaints
- not sure how this screen will hold up over time with scratches since its not glass
- touch screen seemed responsive enough, didn't notice any major flaws.
- the double tap, single tap using is stupid and confusing. No consistency.
- the OK and Cancel on onscreen menu buttons take up too much screen space. Stupid
- the keyboard is horrible, horrible. There feels like no travel in the keys, felt like a touch sentive keyboard. Will get major getting used it, not even sure if thats possible. Dare to say the keyboard sucks just as bad as the iphone onscreen keyboard! Would have to spend 10-20 mins in the store to figure out if I could really get used to the keyboard (I love the e71 keyboard)

Other than the keyboard and price, I think Nokia have a decent phone. If I can get for under 600, I would probably get this phone

After alot of research, it looks like TomTom 6.02 doesn't run on s60v5 but 6.01 does, though as expected it doesn't support touch. I haven't been able to install Tomtom 6.01 though because of the "expired certificate" error. Any hints?

Yes, I know Tomtom doesn't support the internal GPS but I'd still like to use it with an external bluetooth GPS receiver because IMHO it has the best user interface, even better then Garmin. Anybody test the N97 with Tomtom 6.01?

I've noticed alot of people in this thread saying how much of a pain it is to scroll through lists on the 5800, but I just don't understand why!! Just grab the scroll bar on the right and you can jump from beginning to end or anywhere in between with one flick of your thumb/finger! Or am I misunderstanding peoples frustrations??

Square images will distort when they rotate. 360x640. And from what I've seen, the background does not rotate with the icons when you switch from portrait to landscape and vice versa.

There's no need to deep cycle the latest new betteries. Just charge it full and use it. Remember you will get horrible battery life the first 5 days until the battery levels out. So don't freak out right away.

Also the latest batteries prefer to be fully charged. So top off the battery as often as possible. Even if its only for 5 min here and there. Totally draining lithium ion batteries repeatedly reduces the overall life of the battery. So top off when possible.

Lol thanks for posting that - Man the ***** that original video stirred in the South Asian community!

Back OT - Imagine shooting that video on the N97
