*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

dont forget people...capacitative screens are virtually unusable with gloves on...as opposed to the mighty resistive screen which can be used with gloves on...very important feature for us canadians here the way i see it... :)

I'm 43. I've been playing computer games since the 1970s. My wife, also over 40, and a few years older than me, probably plays computer games more than I do. About half the members of my World of Warcraft guild (Curmudgeons on Feathermoon) are over 40. My father plays computer games, and he's 77. My mother in law also plays computer games, also in her 70s.

My first computer was a Processor Technology Sol with 16KB of memory. Yes, those are really wood panels on the sides. This predated the Apple II, TRS-80, etc.

Trek-80 rocked. Wow, there's a pdf of the manual here - http://www.sol20.org/manuals/trek80.pdf

Some other computer games I've spent a lot of time with. I really can't remember them all...
dungeon (which became Zork when ported to Apple II, PC, etc)
Original adventure
An Atari 800 space shooter game that I can't remember the name of
hack
nethack
cbzone, a clone of Battlezone
dragonbane (palm game)
rogue, urogue
ragnarok - this was an old PC/DOS rogue-like game from the early-mid 90s
moria
Wizardry
Angband
Doom
Quake
Civilization and sequels
Alpha Centauri
Diablo
Everquest (eqmac)
World of Warcraft
The Quest (currently playing this on my iPod touch - I had an iPhone at one point, but I decided I needed a device that would reliably make and receive calls)

well it's not that anyone w/ tmobile couldn't get it, the 3G just may not work, but we'll see.

nowadays, most places have wifi so i don't think it would be a dealbreaker for me if i REALLY liked the phone. if i was a tmo customer, i would definitely wait and play with it before deciding whether it's worth forgoing the 3g if it doesn't have the band to support tmo.

Good grief man don't take it so personally. I don't fall into one of those groups and I don't feel offended because I know he didn't mean it that way.

How about this. We are all weird. Is that inclusive enough? :D

When did I knock other OS's though? I simply said that people are lauding this new iPhone that hasn't been announced yet for its hardware even though you can't fully utilize it and RIM's devices are still business devices, no matter how nice the screen is and they've totally ignore stating that the Blackberry's most powerful asset is as a business device (pay close attention to the next Blackberry commercial that comes on TV, if you didn't know what a Blackberry is prior to seeing it, you wouldn't even think it was an Enterprise tool). I didn't even defend Nokia, I echoed the exact sentiments of those who responded when I asked "Why is the choice of CPU in the N97 such a big deal?" and offered my reply to them.

Furthermore, I said nothing about fan boys (the exact term was spec whore) and I didn't defend Nokia's choice to use the hardware they used, I simply said, "If it's not broke, don't break it".

I'm entitled to my opinions just as much as you are entitled to yours, if you're happy with your Bold, that's fine, I'm just as happy with my E71. However, just because you disagree with me, don't run off at the mouth and say that I'm talking garbage. Just put me on your ignore list and eat a ****.

Why don't you just sit quietly over there and wait for your replacement OmniaHD?

Not to crap on at+t, but in my experience and friend's experiences who have since switched to tmo, at+t cannot compete with the voice quality of tmo. Yeah their data is out there and available, but my experience with their data thru my work is drops alot. I frequently have to resort to my personal tmo powered devices on edge to complete atask as at+t has dropped me off yet again. I'm sure it's fine for lots of folks, my experience has been way diff. And forget data, dropped calls happen with them as well as hollow sounding static also. This is the reason I left sprint years ago. My phones are phones first and stellar voice quality is #1. Tmo delivers in this regard. IMO the better carrier is not at+t. Just my experience and my .02

The n97 is quite a disappointment. Maybe nokia will get it right with their next phone. it should be announced in a couple of months and debut sometime next year.

I don't think you are correct. Try to order yourself at their website. It will allow you to buy.

BTW, They are getting 4000 white & 8000 black units & the ETA is 5/31!

Exactly. I'll probably let both in there for awhile. I'd hate to have the preorder sell out after my early order but before the promo order and then not be able to get the phone for awhile.... been waiting on an upgrade for a LONG while. Worst case scenario is I'm sending back the first one and paying the insured shipping back to Nokia for the full refund.

If I could be sure the wait is short, then would be willing to do it, of course, but if it was going to be months then a couple hundred bucks isn't going to break me.

My best guess is that the NA version will be out in June or soon after. Nokia has been pretty good about getting the NA versions out sooner......umm scratch that. Where's the 5800 NAM version :befuddled

"Early July"

Right. 8mp would be "high end" since there are several phones with it. 12mp would be "class leading" at this point, along with features like the facial detection and xenon flash.

Don't get me wrong, I still ordered it since I'm counting on it being tried and proven and the other features answer my needs. The point of a "class leading" camera in a cell phone is convergence and that it can replace a point & shoot type. Right now, this will barely qualify, much less do it in the "class leading" manner I was expecting from a flagship phone from Nokia.
