*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

I'm sure it's been answered already and remember some discussion from early on in the thread (when I was just lurking) about it but noticed from the manual that Nokia says:

"The surface of this device does not contain nickel in the platings. The surface of this device contains stainless steel. "

So at least that metal looking band is actually metal, huh?

I see it the other way, people that love touchscreen, good quality music, qwerty keyboard and good camera will find all of this together in one device only in N97.

I agree with you about the price, but I think it can't be lower than 500$ realistically speaking because like it or not it's positioned as a high end device and you can't expect lower price than N86/N96.

Yeah when it takes 4/5 of the big 3.5" screen to do the same as active standby did on a 2.1" screen. Leaving you with one widget left. Only you would think that is acceptable. But then again you never had a S60 so to you I guess anything is an improvement.

So now you are reading the spec sheet to me as if I didn't know.

Reported what? Go use a 5800 and report to yourself what the internet experience is like. This will be the same with kinetic scrolling and auto-hide side bar that takes 3 tries to bring back up - go watch the designer video again. You have to bring that back up each time you want to go back a page. Also still no user controlled multiple window support. That alone makes me prefer the iPhone browser. Beyond that the other things like text columns that zoom exactly to the screen size on the iPhone, instead of 3 tries -> options -> zoom bar appears -> change zoom (this takes a few tries to get it to zoom at right size where a text column fits the screen) -> get out of zoom bar -> go back to full screen (the last step happens automatically now on the N97).

So basically repeat that process for each text column you want to read, otherwise the double tap zoom on S60 goes to sizes that make no sense at all. Worthy of the entry level device it is.

I don't know but maybe you should try S60v5 on the 5800 and see what exactly the internet experience will be. Imagine the scroll issue is solved and menu auto-hide is now there. So: entry level device transformed to high end device by these two things.

You want the Nokia flagship no matter what so go get it. You've waited this long. I'm sure you'll be happy with it. Going from no browser to any browser is quite a nice feeling.

Why would the phone have to perform defectively for me to be proven wrong? The point still stands just as well if another device is able to perform the same as it does, only faster. I'm not trying to say that the N97 is going to crash and burn either. I've said several times that it will perform -just fine-, in a world where every other manufacturer is trying to get their devices to perform better than -just fine-.

I've also said that even I'm not interested in gaming, but I am interested in what can be done with better hardware outside of gaming.

Ranting in the i8910 thread would be completely out of line because it has nothing to do with what I'm talking about. We can argue individual specs all day, but the CPU and RAM are the heart and brains of a device. If effects everything, not just someone's personal preference of capacitive versus resistive or QWERTY versus virtual QWERTY.

When that time comes.. S60 will be far ahead of the game.. :p

Heck I think Nokia will even place S60 to their Mid range tier and have the Symbian Foundation OS be the Super Smartphone OS.

Keep waiting.. Its worth the wait.. :D

Nokia build their phones with various materials before the final product. So my assumptions is that they built glass and plastic display versions for trail to see what works best.

When I met with the Nokia guy (Chanse Arlington) he said that there's 3 more builds before the final product on 4/25.

But like you said there is always a chance that the material might be different.

If you used the N95 you may remember that the Plum version's back cover and the Sand versions are very different in material. The plum had a rubbery grip material while the sand color one was smooth.

So who knows.. which kinds of make me want to wait and try both phones before deciding to buy...

No I don't know much about Chinese input methods at all. I'm not Chinese and don't know any Chinese people but I do know that their language doesn't have a straight up and down alphabet like ours.

I honestly don't see myself ever using a stylus with this phone. Makes no sense to walk around with one if the phone has no slot to hold it.

Unfortunately blaxx, I think Isaac is winning in the WANT NOW category, especially since he's going to brave being a beta tester to get it ;)

Btw this is amazing I updated my iPhone and I haven't had a browser crash in over a week. This is thefirst time I've ever been able to finish a post on hofo with it LOL

I get $5.99 unlimited EDGE with T-Mobile.

But if the N97 won't sent e-mails or IMs with an S60v5 instant messaging client after I plug in epc.tmobile.com in the APN, I am going to eat it.

They're the same price on the sites that are taking pre-orders for both. Mobile City Online is the only place I've found that's charging more for the N97 but that's only for the NAM version (the Euro version is $799.99 while the NAM is $899.99. The OmniaHD is listed at $799.99 as well.)

Please give us more than 2 home screens!!! I want one for every direction and each to have customizable content both from in device and the internet.

This is really shaping up to be a nice concept.

Agreed. Regardless of the ways anyone tries to spin it, this is (and will always be) a fact. The Omnia HD's features are more advanced than the N97's, that's proved with the numbers and letters on the spec. sheet.

Facts can not be disputed, opinions certainly can.
