*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

Nokia should have just released this phone instead of the N96. Depending on the functional use of the phone I just might be enticed to buy it because I do like the slide out qwerty keyboard it has that's the one thing I feel missing from the N95 instead of the multimedia keys on the left side of it. Should be a good phone though! Also if you guys read business week online some people just slammed Nokia saying they were playing catch up, which I found to be funny.

I just purchased a copy from their website and downloaded the installation file. Copy it over to the phone with the application installer. Run the application .sis file. When it says this program is not supported by this phone, just click 'continue anyway'. It installed just fine and I was able to create new word documents with it and save. Not sure about excel or powerpoint though. After contacting their support email, they are processing a refund for me.

However, I have found an office editing/creating program for word, excel, and powerpoint for S60v5 from mobisystems. Any experience with this?

They should go even further with that second homescreen. They could allow so many possibilities with that second screen. But i honestly think that they wont include any customization options for it. I just have a feeling that we would have already seen some of it if they were going to allow it. Squandered opportunity.

Remember for anyone that's gonna be using edge, when data is actively transmitting any time someone calls you it gets kicked right to voicemail. Normally this is no big deal. But if an n97 has multiple widgets that are constantly accessing the web to update themselves, you could potentially be missing tons of calls. Just a thought.

You have to wonder if they will come out with another device like they did with the n95. Sure, they are adapting some 3g that is usable here in the states, but if they are going to leave out that band, will they make a different model or are they trying to limit the amount of production models they need to make and just have one design with one set of chips and such. We will just have to wait and see as we inch closer to the release date and see what nokia has to offer, as well as see what the FCC passes and doesn't pass through its doors.

I think there's a good reason why this was announced now: to stave off the disappointment people will have with the 5800. The 5800is nice and all, but it actually was a disappointing implementation of S60v5. Compared to this it was a joke. It has 2 configurable modes and absolutely no customization, no widgets, no live updating of data on the home screen and it feels like a Fisher-Price. Had they not shown this the perception of S60v5 would have rested on the 5800 implementation which frankly is slow and not all the impressive. Okay for a first attempt but nowhere in the same league just looking at the videos of both and having played with a proto 5800.

People who think this is a jazzed up 5800, open your eyes, or wait until your 5800 arrives. You'll see it pretty fast, it is not an N-series class device for a reason and Nokia made it that way because they clearly were not confident in that first attempt at S60v5 to put it in an N-series. They severely limited it to just serve the basic functions of a music phone with touch screen and that's it.
