*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

@Blaxx

I have an answer for you it may not be the only answer but it certainly is mine and i would imagine a few others and the reason we are not happy and not going to drop serious cash on a N97 is really very simple and it's this.

We actually expect and want to be able to use a smart phone to it's full potential which involves viewing the whole www with as close to a desktop experience as possible. To be able to have as many E-Mail accounts as needed all reliably pushing our Mail to our devcie and expect to be able to run multiple application's at once with little or no slow down or crashes. We want and expect a premium Muisc player and a Video Player that can play the best quality we can get. Now to be honest i just don't think the N97 will deliver sufficiently on all of those and that's what we expect from a premium flagship devcie for our money.

Now if you think that's crazy or wrong i don't know but I'll spend my money elsewhere and get as close to those objectives as i can. That's what we expected from Nokia and a premium priced flagship product and for it to have the best tech available at the time which it quite simply doesn't. But that's why we bought N93's, N95's, N95 8GB's and E90's because at the time of release they were quite simply the best available and worth thier price.

Now by your own admission you only want a N97 to make and receive calls, send and receive some SMS's and browse ESPN on their mobile Wap version oh and of course not forgetting your main priority to be fashionable or is it cool and trendy. Seriously reading what you want it for gave me the biggest laugh of the year as you obviously have a lot more money then sense as you just want to be cool by using your phone as a status symbol. Seriously that's just so funny and sad it's not true and of course your excited you can't wait to wave a N97 around and boast how much this beauty you just bought cost you and not forgetting be one of the first with it.

I really am at a loss as to why you even want such a large devcie for the things you want it to do. If the big screen is of no real value the QWERTY isn't really necessary your not going to use the Home screen and Widgets for any real purpose so besides pose or bragging rights just what's so great about an N97 for you? But of course you can't see why any of us that actually want to use the thing properly are concerned it isn't going to be good enough as your needs and demands are so simple.

Oh boy they've come to some basic realizations here:

The side buttons in the browser disappear on their own finally.

The guy said: "the user wants to know the website is loading"

Nice because they didn't seem to understand that when they made the 5800.

Ok, I understand now, you're right but then like I said before to liknsmak it won't imply the same proportion gain that happened between N95-4 vs N95-1.

didnt it say somewhere that they boosted the clock speed or something? knowing its similar CPU, i now wonder if the speed will be fast enough for all that "always-on" data connection stuff that will be going on behind the scenes for the homescreen widgets. seems like alot of CPU power will be taken up in the background for updating THREE social networking sites, lets say myspace, facebook and weather. hell add in push email.

can that CPU handle all that stuff going on, plus still keep up with the smooth touch screen responsiveness that we would expect? i dunno. and i was just praising it 2 posts up. :buddies:

If the resistive screen on the N97 is anything like the 5800 (and i suspect it'll be exactly the same) i'll be very happy, having never had any problems using it what so ever!
What I notice alot of people doing when they try my 5800 is pressing the screen too hard, when in fact it works a whole lot better with just a light touch. After I tell them that they barely need to press down at all they have all found it very responsive and continue to use it without issues!
Just thought i'd point out my observations to assist others that may not be getting the most out of their 5800's, and also to hopefully help out potential buyers of the N97.

Really? You know this for a fact? You have in-depth knowledge of the structuring of Symbian and its licensing requirements? Some amount of work goes into tailoring each release to the hardware that is specifically on the hand set. For this reason you can't install S60FP1 from the N95 on the E71 and vice versa. On top of that the licensing made it cost prohibitive for manufacturers to develop a new version of a new FP to be installed on other handsets, both in terms of new licensing requirements and dedicating a software team to do the work. All the decisions come down to a business case and statements like "they don't really care about us" does nothing for your credibility.

Not sure why everyone was crying about the $700 MSRP price on Nokia's web site. Every single phone has shown up with online retailers for ~$100 cheaper than MSRP. It's already at $600 and is only going to go down from there.

Take a close look at the N97...there's no space to put a 4th row of keys without the keys being too close to the screen, or too close to the edge, or simply making the device larger...
I'm as disappointed as most of you about the processor, butmostly about the RAM, n the RAM is my only real concern, but the device fits my need, and i can't stand people bashing some parts of the device that they have never touched or that have no issue. I will reservve my judgements on the keyboard until I prss a key...

JB:

Totally agree. There is a market for a PDA/browser/music player that does those things exceptionally well. And there is a market for a mini pocket computer.

If you are a company going for the latter then it would behoove you to make sure each device is at the cutting edge of mobile hardware. Because calling something a "computer" gives it big shoes to fill.

In 2006 and I could "buy" that the N95 was that era's phone/computer device.

In 2009 the N97 is the same thing. WinMo now murders Nokia on the phone/computer thing even in software IMHO. If anything as a mini-computer I thought Pocket PC was the coolest thing. It has built in SMB support, built in RDP, so many ways to connect and use it in a Windows environment. As a phone they have a reputation for instability and that's likely due to how absolutely open it is. It's as open as a Windows PC for the most part. You have custom OS installs. Programs galore. No restrictions on anything. Any software goes, no signing BS. The hardware have now with nice screens, fast processors, powers a nice pocket computer. Sure they don't have the nicest cameras or anything, but they don't play the computer + camera + camcorder game so much on that side. I've never known a computer to have all that extra stuff.

Nokia gives you a little taste of each in their devices. You have underpowered computer + noisy camera not useful in indoor shots at all + actually pretty decent video for youtube etc. You see a glimmer of promise in each of those but that promise will not be fulfilled. So you have to pretty much accept the quality and function of most features of the device when you receive it. You will get tossed a bone here and there in FW updates but nothing to write home about.

Next up in the phone/computer business will be Android. But they aren't close yet and not worth a discussion now.

So Nokias are good phones, but calling them "computer" is insulting to computers.

I won't deny that the look and design of the N97 conveys "computer" but real beauty isn't just skin deep.

It's far too early to say that.

I'm not liking the fact that the touchscreen kb is gone also. I don't want to have to slide out the screen all the time.

I just watched a video on flickr showing the N97. The screen-saver didn't seem to animated like the iphone where it said "drag to unlock". Can anyone confirm this?

Performance issues on which device? I can give you a list from each I've used, with the best performing being the ones I owned in 2007, ironically.

His Omnia was also running Windows Mobile, which explains everything.

lol. They said no charging over micro-USB. Is there another port somewhere else on that proto?

No stylus in their box, though at least the Preorder says there will be one.

No complaint about the 128MB of memory with about 70MB free on start and yet no complaint about it.

Interesting that they say 32GB microSD possible, yet Nokia says 16GB max (32Gb are rare and very expensive).

369mhz ARM11 and they praise it's speed compared to the 5800 lol... blazing fast menus, huh?

Doesn't look like he many/any widgets to really play with other than the music one.

the iphone comparo shows me what I've always loved about this phone and where all others failed miserable wrt iphone... finally something with a decent screen to challenge. X1, Touch Pro, etc all have smaller screens even if they go higher rez.
