*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

In this comparison, yes it absolutely does. We're talking about a $700 device that all of you are planning to use for a couple years. The competition (not just the OmniaHD) has already made commitments to the next generation of processors and has fitted their devices with more RAM to go with it. The only reason that makes the OmniaHD that much more significant is because it's running the same software!

I'm trying to talk about value, which may be a lost cause with you guys if you all A) got your N97's for $500 and B) don't live in an area where UMTS 1900 would suffice. When manufacturers improve their products, add new features, increase the hardware for better performance, and charge a higher price because of all of it, it is NOT fair for Nokia to charge their customers MORE when they haven't made the same level of improvements.

I want to see it make and receive phone calls LOL. We haven't seen any of the phone functionality. Maybe they finally changed it so the pictures assigned to your contacts show up bigger than just a little thumbnail

Finally, got an email from AMAZON !!!!!! The phone will be here today !!!!!
Yeahhhhhhh !!!!!!!! Do I just switch my SIM card from my Bold to the N97 and change plans online ? or do I have to go to an ATT store ???
Thanks

Krieger

I don't know why that's funny either. 512mb RAM for a cell phone is right around the corner in A9 architecture. It was very improbable for the iPhone 3G S to have it, but not impossible.

i hope i didnt get you too excited with that one... :)

new york was insane...and as for the nokia store...i had to got there twice...must say that i really liked the 5800 also...never played with it before but it sure felt solid in every respect...

I think Nokia really wants to listen to what their users want to say. They've launched countless program to let us give feedback to them. I'm not sure what will come out of our comments here on HoFo; but believe it makes better sense to participate in their(Nokia's) feedback programs directly. You also get the benefit of prizes from them too. =)

Nokia is making changes; after the crappy hardware N85 they're going to release the N86 which is a much better built in material quality with glass, steal and better plastic. The N97 can't be compared to the 5800 in built quality as well.

They're not going to make drastic changes, but changes they will make. Their market share is shrinking, economy is bad and every company wants to make their own mobile phone these days so competition is fierce. The down-sliding statisical/financial numbers are many slaps to Nokia face and they're aware that something is wrong.

Strategy wise, I'm pretty sure Nokia have choosen to get out of the hardware race. With OS, they're committed to symbian/s60 as they've decided to buy the whole company. The one area that Nokia is spending tons of resources on is software (Ovi, Maps, Messaging - something that no other company puts too much effort on).

I'm sure Nokia can start a new Touch OS and built it from scratch but that would mean thousands of 3rd party software will become obsolete since the developer would need to start from scratch as well. Developer can no longer simply update the app coding to include touch features.

The reason I brought up the nokia internet tablets is because those tablets have been around for almost 5 years and have a good library of softwares. Nokia can easily implement the maemo/2008os on their phone if we voice out that message to them.

One of the interesting thing that came out of the last NYC S60 user gathering is that the product manager is aware that the s60 OS is overly complicated and they're going to try to make it simpler for the non-tech geeks. The direct quote is... if I remember correctly, "just because we can put a feature or something on a phone doesn't mean we will or have to" within the context of enhancing user experience. That came out of a question when somebody asked why the n97 doesn't have the on screen keyboard.

The N85 with it's OLED screen has 8 hours (or something) of video playback. You have to figure that the extra ~4 hours compared to the other devices tells you something about AMOLED power consumption. Of course, if it's dark movies it'll last longer and bright white movies it'll last less time. (think aliens vs star trek)

CPU clock rate in such a device is a terrible way to judge anything in these System On Chip (SOIC) Besides the CPU, you have memory speed, flash speed, bus io, etc, etc. If you increase CPU speed and keep memory access the same speed you just put wait states in, which means the CPU idles/stalls waiting for data.

Where do you have performance issues? Menu changes are faster than I can follow. The built in web browser is as slow as molasses, but opera mini is fast and so are many other apps. My only complaint is image processing speed after taking a picture.

I took my phone out of my phone, slide it open, started opera mini, googled a web page, and had it load over EDGE and was reading the text before a friend even had opera mini open. He had on Omnia (WinMo, not the HD) in hid hand and had evdo. Maybe the omina is that much of a beast?

Rogers offers the following services:

GSM/GPRS/EDGE on the 850 and 1900 MHz bands (Also known as 2G GSM, or 2.5G in the case of EDGE)
UMTS/HSDPA on the 850 MHz bands (Also known as 3G GSM)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
So what exactly does this mean...? That Canadians won't be able to use 3G with the N97? And it has some mention of the 1900 Mhz bands... does that mean the phone will downgrade to 2G over here?
