They are 2 entirely different phones with 2 entirely different target audiences in mind. If not for the fact that the OmniaHD runs S60v5, nobody would even be in here talking about it.
Folks are getting confused about 5800 & comparing it with N85 & E71. 5800 is XM, it is just a music centric device, it got EXCELLENT speakers thats it! Nokia will NEVER make all round device, hence they degraded the camera on 5800 though it has CZ lens. Their strategy has been E series is just for emails. N series for pics/video & XM for Music. I don't expect N97 to have speakers as good as 5800
Better than having to press the arrow key to access like some people said earlier in the thread.
It's in the same general area as a real keyboard so it shouldn't be that bad, more worried about the spacebar. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt until I use it. I don't think it'll take more than a day or two to get used to.
^^^ You have an E71 and you know all about no lag even on the freescale platform. Also did you see the demo videos of the N97? No lag there either. This phone represents a software upgrade that we'll all like. I have a feeling that the 3430 phone will come out by December or Q1 2010 and putting this level of optimized software on it will make it fly.
The N97 menu seems to allow you to put shortcuts for whatever you desire on the home screen.
I think the decision to stay with Freescale this time is all about size and energy. The phone is actually very small for housing a 1500MAh battery and a keyboard and a screen of its size. It will be a very practical phone IMHO and I believe that in one fell swoop it will address every single complaint I've had with S60. In fact you can see the thinking in the E66 and E71 already. Fully customizable home screen is going to be a real winner. This phone can be all things to all people.
I know the Archos has the 3430, but have you seen how big it is and also I wonder about battery? I think the N97 is a smart step to ensure usability and practicality. I'm normally all about higher CPU speeds, faster, bigger, better but this time I think they focused on what really matters: Making S60 touch the best touch screen interface in the business.
The 3430 will come and I'll be excited for it, but I'll take the N97. It will in no way be another N96. I just know it.
My general take is that I like it a lot. I had (and still do) my N95-1 for 2 years and really had no fever for a new device. Prior to that I don't think I could keep anything for more than a few months. But the 97 caught me...I believe the build and software can be improved-and will be-by firmware upgrades, but it is by no means as much in need as the original 95-1 was when it first came out. V20 on the 95-1 made a night and day difference if I recall.
I will say that the keypad in my opinion could have been left out entirely in favor of an onscreen qwerty. I can't see the keys so well, and the characters are out of the question..as a result, since I received this on Friday I've kinda written off the keypad and have used the slider mechanism just a few times as a result. Maybe I'll try to get used to it, but I believe the keypad and slider are not much more than a gimmick. Fortunately the onscreen T9 works really well with good feedback and LARGE numbers/letters, that I can see even better than my trusty N95.
Enough for now..I gotta get back to work
P.S. I'm 57 with good eyesight...just the usual need for walmart readers..1.25 is fine for me
qwerty predictive is a little weird..so yes, I agree that it's not a big loss-if the onscreen T9 is decent I doubt I'll even be sliding this bad boy much anyway
Except that we haven't seen the v210 that the Euro got. But the E71 is a rare example. v100 was so solid it really didn't need an update that I could tell. All I got for my time was a couple themes.
More memory would be more important than a faster processor at this point. And even that is contingent on not enough time / motivation for the proper optimization.
Having a xenon flash would rank higher than both of those IMO.
Now, when you get back, don't bother trying to catch up on this thread. I spent a week in Mexico and I had to skip a huge number of pages to stay sane.
You know what to do. Pics, info, rumors, release dates...whatever. Post it here and keep the forum clean.

IMHO, iPhone touch screen is probably one of the best thing out there. I am sure Apple will do everything in its power to protect that piece of technology and that's why we don't see them licensed it to every manufactures.
I am sure it'll be the same crappy resistive touch screen and hoping that physical keyboard will compensate that.
I'm hoping that the N97 will NOT be another N96. From the design esthetics/queues, performance of the E71 I do believe in my heart it will be a GREAT seller and I want one as well! I've already planned my savings for at least 2. However, announcing a flagship so soon worries me before the 2009 yr begins. Nokia is tricky though.
The E71 is an amazing performer - even with several applications running at a time. I did find a fault when trying to use Joiku Spot-Light with Vista 32bit. After about 30mins of modem connection Joiku runs without transfering data to the laptop - but I think its a fault with Vista as another connection (without resetting Joiku) for an iPhone worked. E71 does have lag though, I just cannot recall when or with which apps. Mostly because its so tolerable (less than 4/5 seconds), I just don't focus on it for long.
These widgets on the home screen - which is AMAZING and better implemented than that Xperia crap "panels" - worries me though regarding its speed. Every demo I've seen since its debut last week Tuesday shows ppl moving the widgets' order very slowly. Ahhh, no I remember what causes lag in the E71 ... Widgets. Takes longer than 5 seconds to load (no other running apps or data connections), and roughly 4seconds to retrieve data (even for Reuters widget).
I don't the reason for teh Archos being so thick has to do with the TI OMAP 3430 solely. I just hope that the N97 performance wise in the real world will stand on top of the world!
Considering how many times Nokia reps have said it on video, it looks like black is being released intitially and probably a few months later the white version.
Sucks to be living in the USA I guess-delays for the white color AND more than likely delays for the NAM version. Hope a new phone doesn't steal my heart before I have a chance to pick one of these up.
