*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

i've seen so many complains, rants, praising, dumb rumors on this thread. its kinda sickning. i agree with the people on not paying more than 600 dollars. to me the n97 is like an upgraded n95 with more memory, keyboard, touch ui. it annoys me when i see everyone with these blackberrys, iphones, lg envys, other qwerty phones and they think its the best phone or sumtn. the n95 pwns almost any phone out there. it doesnt have a qwerty or touch screen but who cares. it still pwns.

I had a little question actually... For what reason is it that they don't have quad-band phones more often? Is it because it will be more expensive for the consumer? Or is it because it will require more hardware/software support from the engineers?

I've always hated how the D-pad is on the right side on the N82 and other S60v3 phones. It should be left like game controllers, imo.

I think pencil key would be more useful though.

Yeah but this didn't look like speculation. It looked like a legitimate inventory screenshot with total number of orders so far with total number of shipments expected. It said all 5 warehouses will each get 1600 units. So cal, penn, ten, and 2 other locations. Penn has 1800 orders so far, so they are sold out and then some. So cal has 1200 units sold, so there is still about 400 units available from first batch. The others were all less than 1600 units.

The more and more I read this thread and the closer the prospective release date is to arriving, the more I worry about the N97 ousting my X1i. I find myself increasingly averse to the shortcomings of the X1i that I am confident the N97 will fix (mediocre, hissy music playback and laggy, generally unstable OS) yet am unsure of other things (stepping down from WVGA to sub-VGA, increasing in size, not having such a customizable and potentially pretty OS). I'll wait to see what everyone else has to say before even opening up the box.

Part of the reason for utilizing the processors that they do is because of the streamlining that Nokia does for each product. There is a lot of work that is done to maximize code performance on a given platform and for Nokia to start fresh at this point with S60v5 is just silly. Utilize a faster performing ARM 11 core processor to get the performance necessary, take everything you've learned about maximizing performance on that platform and use it for one of the final products before branching off to Symbian Foundation projects. I fully expect Symbain Foundation products to bring us the OMAP3 processors we expect. It will be coming on the next tablet so it's not like Nokia isn't working with the newer tech. And OMAP really will be fantastic when Nokia brings it out. We get a huge increase in performance for lower battery draw. You can see this with the huge standby and talk times that the OmniaHD is quoting. But why would Nokia spend the time to develop S60v5 for OMAP3 just to scrap all that work when rolling over to Symbian Foundation projects. Take what you know on platforms that you've been working with for a couple years and deliver a product. If Nokia had started with OMAP3 for N97 it wouldn't be ready yet.

Does the N97 have predictive text like the E71 from the qwerty keyboard?

Steve: No, what you type is what you get. For better or for worse! I for one don't really like the qwerty predictive system, so it's not big loss as far as I'm concerned.

I smell some Non-Nokia Marketing reps in this thread :hehehe: ,,,,,I think they are being paid to do this job (bash Nokia N97) or they will be given a place in Apple heaven!

I have a question (that I really don't know): setting aside N95, what other Nokia model received "an update/upgrade" less than one year after the original model?

And to add to the discussion I have the following based on wikipedia release dates:

N95-1 March 2007
N95-2 August 2007
N95-3 (NAM) November 2007
N95-4 (NAM) January 2008

So if we apply parallelism we have that N97-1 and N97-3 are being released at the same time (point for Nokia that we have to recognize even with the no so wise 128MB RAM choice), and if the same history repeats we should to have to wait at least 5-9 months more until we see another release (N97-2 & N97-4) that doesn't mean to be able to buy it.

If I really like my N97 (I hope so but I still don't have it in my hands, it's in route) I think that I'll be enjoying my phone for at least 1 year before I'll be able to get an upgraded or new version at a good price (unless the new one sells for less than 600$ from the beginning or there's another price glitch).

@finaldecison

Well i would appreciate it if you manged to stick to the truth and not make up and credit me with things i have never said as i wouldn't ever say anything as stupid as you claim here,

"I just picked on your line that phone will become slower with ''usage'' like by calling/texting and laughed,"

I also said i didn't mean to sound rude or insulting but some of what you posted made it sound like you are a S60 newbie. Now you are starting to contradict yourself as in your first statement you said

"It will not get slower if you know 'how to' use it"

yet now you are saying

"every1 knows installing more apps, especially 5000 songs on memory card, slows it down"

So which one is it? or having 32GB of storage are you not meant to load it up with Songs, Video's, pictures or Documents or heaven forbid apps that use any Ram. Doesn't that seem like a bit of a waste of all that storage space then?

As for how long you've been involved with mobiles well big deal I've been involved since pre launch of the analogue system in the UK and been a full member of The Mobile Data Association. When i ran my own Mobile data company so actually i do know a little bit about what I'm saying thank you. Also i really don't need or appreciate your advice about what i can or can't post it's not your forum and you are not a Mod so if you don't like what i post don't read it or respond to it, simple isn't it?

Marc
