*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

Should have made a post about it from the phone. :D

Why would the camera be prototype? Eldar mentioned that, too. Isn't it identical to the camera from N85 and largely unchanged from N95? Why would that not be done yet? Should have been the first thing lol.

Far more advanced?

Sure the screen is bigger and you have the AMOLED screen which is going to look great. I'd personally rather have the slide out QWERTY than the larger screen. Looking at pics of this thing has me thinking that I'll be carrying something the size of my N810 around all the time. The N97 is pushing the limit at its size as it is.

8MP cam? So what? If Nokia can get light into the 5MP sensor it will be more than enough for my needs for quick snapshots. I've had 2MP digicams that take better shots than any cell phone including the loved N82. 5MP resolution is overkill as it is and you're never going to post the full size image.

720p vid recording? Not interested at 24fps. The videos I've seen from it aren't fluid because it's 24fps and not 30fps. I can't stand to watch its jerkiness. If I can't stand to watch it I'm not going to record in that mode. Wasted feature.

Capacitive touch? If done right resistive can be just as responsive as capacitive. The resistive screen on my N810 works pretty well without much optimization. I will reserve final judgment for when I actually touch the phone. But then I have the physical keyboard to use. And yes, multitouch can be implemented in resistive screens.

7.2Mbps HSDPA? So the Nokia is 3.6Mbps HSDPA. Doesn't matter since ATT's network can't sustain that speed. Still matters less since the Sammy won't work on ATT's network. Sorry, no EDGE for me on this far more advanced device.

The processor on the Samsung is nice but we still don't have too much data on the internals of the N97. Judgment to be reserved until data is released and we see reviews.

What am I missing in far more advanced specs? I have a phone capable of 8MP shots and now 720p video but am limited to 8GB or 16GB of internal space versus the 32GB of the N97. Good thing the Samsung is expandable. There's not a whole lot on my N95-4 but there's little space on the 8GB there. It's surprising how quickly some MP3s and downloading some video podcasts will fill that up.

I see a lot of *****in' that Nokia doesn't care for the US market but at least they bring us 3G capable devices. The sales that they do have over here are small compared to the number of units that they move in Europe and Asia but they still bring us the phones and they work to bring them to us around the same time as the Euro releases. So far there's nothing pulling me away from the N97. But there's one thing that I've got in the back of my head that may make me waver a bit on the N97 that I'll put in another post.

Haha yah i noticed that too. Those videos were not bad. I think the keyboard lighting looks beautiful. Menus seem quite speedy. The only thing that I'm a bit weary on is the scrolling.

Need to see more hands-on videos with the final product to determine how good/bad it is.

Mmhmm...3.0 solves many quibbles people have with the iPhone. As I have been saying, if they improved the HW in terms of camera/video capabilities, I think many people who use Nseries devices would make the switch.

Oohhh... I almost bid on it until I read that it was MADE IN CHINA. You know, Nokias made in China are known to have quality issues. :hehehe: :hehehe:

TS wont be as good as iphone that's for sure.

If i would be sensible i would jump over this device(i will probally buy it if the price is right ;) ). There's Symbian^2 devices from SE(Idou), Nokia, maybe Samsung, new iphone and Palm Pre coming in this year. So N97 feels just something that's thrown there before S60 leaves the picture(sr1329 yes i know Symbian^2 and probally Symbian^3 will look much like 5th edition :D ). That said i really don't think this phone is fail for Nokia, but probally those who like the 5th edition might give a thought for this phone.

^^^
1) The E90 successor needs to be shorter. The internal keyboard is so wide that it requires too much travel of the thumbs an a lot of movements from your hands. It's very uncomfortable to type on it. Keep the screen the same size and get rid of the extra unused space on top and bottom of the device.
2) The E90 successor needs the N95 camera (or better).
3) The E90 successor needs US 3G.
If all these changes are done with it, I believe it would be a better device than the N97.

LOL! The N96 is a fine device. I'd want one if i didn't already have 4 phones in front of me right now :D

i wouldn't have guessed Nokia would pull this one out right now. i guess that's why ppl wrote about how the nokia execs says we're in the dark on this one. The keyboard doesn't look typical nokia.

I would've waited until Q1 2009 right before FCC approvals to announce. but i guess things are doing really bad in the flagship area so they had to do this to slow down ppl from buying phones from other manufacturers.

Huh?

Um, so how about you follow your own advice? Not being combative but honestly, that was a thinly veiled attempt to go back in to that ridiculous line of discussion.

A better question: what is the implementation of access points/access point groups on the N97/S60 5th? Will something like Psiloc Connect still be a requirement?

Well maybe i shouldnt have called the 5800 phenominal. But i am very happy with it and its performance. It can run 3-4 heavy apps decently. I'm not usually running youtube along with garmin and nokia maps all at the same time. For the moderate apps its very fine.

So from that logic the n97 is going to perform very similar to the 5800. Its probably not even a good choice for you i would say. If you didnt like the 5800 then the n97 isnt gonna change the world so to speak.
